Kitty has the runs... please help~

Post by Daina »

Milo, my 7 yr old male cat, for several days, has been having very soft stools (they are not completely liquid, but pretty darn loose) This morning, he left some of it for us (for our perusal) in our clothes closet, which is highly unusual for him. He is more lethargic than usual. But he HAS been purring when we pet him and even played a little (without getting up) since this has started. He's normally a pretty inactive kitty and is a bit obese too. So it's hard to tell when he's being lethargic.

We haven't changed foods recently. He eats a very good food (Science) and hasn't eaten anything out of the ordinary. No plants that he could have gotten into. He doesn't go outside. We have another cat and he goes out, but is never allowed to wander outside of our patio area.

The problem is, the vet is closed this weekend until Tuesday. We have a small animal emergency clinic. It's expensive, but I'll take him if this is an emergency. I just can't figure out for sure if this IS an emergency! HELP!
Anyone have any thoughts ASAP? :(

How long is "several days"? If this has been persistent past 4 days, then I wouldn't wait for your vet on Tues, I would get kitty seen immediately. Diarrhea leads to dehydration which can in turn affect organ function. The vet/ER vet can do a quick fecal if necessary, administer fluid support, and will prescribe meds based on the fecal results, degree of hydration, possibly change in diet, and/or other meds for GI inflammation, bacterials, etc.
