straining to defecate

Hello: I have two male 4 years old cats. My big guy 20 lbs. + is straining to take a dump. He is making low grunting meows while he getting it out. I also think he may be drinking more water than usual. Do i have a problem? Is there anything i can do? thanks for your advise Philly : :(

Get him to your vet immediately please....constipation can be a serious health issue, your vet can give him a safe kitty enema to relieve the symptoms. Also, if he is grossly overweight, talk to your vet in detail about an appropriate weight management program.

On another note, don't mistake constipation for urinary tract obstruction, which can be fatal if not detected, treated ASAP. To your vet NOW please.

in addition to what traci says, get him there faster bacause what my look like straining to defecate may also be a blocked urinary bladder--in fact call faster than what traci says, you may have a real problem

Also ask your vet to check for abcesses... Our mythie was doing the same and the vet totally missed that it was an abcess in her lower abdomen. That was my two cents :)

Last week I was "sure" my cat was constipated also, and it turned out to be a urinary blockage, which needs IMMEDIATE attention. Hopefully you've already BEEN to the vet by now!!
