Litter Box
Litter Box
Hi--new here. I have two 7-month-old kittens (big!) and I have two litter boxes for them. Their litter boxes I have stored under our sink in the laundry room, which is adjacent to the dining room/kitchen. I do clean it out once a day, scoopable litter. I use a product called Fresh Start or somethign like that--I really like it because it does last quite longer than the clay and for dumping outside it is much more better on the environment. I still have a problem with the smell drifting out into the kitchen, though. I have tried every single litter out there and this is the only one that has lasted the longest between changes, but there is still a smell there. Is there something I can add to it to make it smell better??? I heard mention of maybe adding some of that Feline Pine to your litter to make it smell fresher. What are some ideas everyone else does with their litter boxes and places they have them? Thanks for any help on this!! This is a great message board!!
Re: Litter Box
It's great that you have 2 litterboxes -- one for each cat. I have 3 kitties and 3 litterboxes. We keep them in a spare bedroom which doubles as a place for the laundry bins, and some storage bins. Fortunately this room has a window which I keep open (with a window guard so kitties are safe). We also scoop the boxes every day, and faithfully, once a week, my husband empties out ALL the litter, thoroughly washes out the boxes with soap and water, and puts in new litter. I believe we use Fresh Step.
And yes, this is a great board with terrific people.

Hi , Welcome to the board
I use Swheat Scoop (and just posted a note under Automatic Kitty Litters) along with Jason. I have 2 kitties (8 and 3 years old) and have my litter box near the door to my garage on the lower level of my townhouse. The litterbox is covered. I scoop at least every other day if not daily. I also dump it once a month, wash it out thoroughly with Clorox and change the filters on top.
Both cats are on special food for urinary problems which causes them to urinate alot. A smell is sometimes present soon after they use the litter box (depending on what's coming out of them), but the odor decreases soon afterwards.
There are some higher tech litter boxes on the market but I don't know how these works. I know there have been some posts here about air purifiers that are inexpensive.
Can you change the box to a different location??

Re: Litter Box
Yeah, I'm trying to think of a place I can put them that probably wouldn't disperse the odor as much. I like under the sink because it is enclosed and that helps, too. I've cracked a window (we live in Iowa so it is pretty cold), but cracking it a little bit shouldn't change temps too bad--ha! Also I added some baking soda so we'll see how that works and absorbs the odor. Thanks for the suggestions! Keep them coming! Ha!
