hair/skin clumps
hair/skin clumps
rocky had a bump on his skin that seemed to have hair growing from it (or perhaps the bump arrived and the hair remained). i was rubbing the area and the hair clump (and the bump itself) came off; i saved it just in case.
what is left is a small slightly pink bump on his skin. it is not sensitive to him. sound like something that could be normal?

jason....I'd take him to the vet and have it checked...could be something as simple as allergies...is there the possibility of fleas? Frodo use to get these bumps as a result of flea bites and and allergy to them...they were awful. I'd really recommend having the vet look at it just to be cautious.

yes. my cats are indoor only with the exception of our screened in back patio. i suppose plenty can get through the screen.Tina B and crew wrote:is there the possibility of fleas?
i use revolution on them, but have not used any for sometime now as rocky recently had p/u and i did not want to conflict his meds with flea control....just being cautious.
i'll keep an eye on the sore that is left and give them both a dose of revolution (and treat their areas).
Jason,
another possibility do the cats every fight or play fight?
A tooth or even nail that penetrates the skin, even fairly midly can result in a small wound that will scab and when the scab falls out any fur attached to it also will fall out with the dead skin usually...there will sometimes be a pink new skin area underneath.
Also, the same could result for a shot or injection site particularly if it's something that is a little caustic to skin - sometimes an antibiotic, etc. , if he's had any of those lately.
I would not be overly worried about it if it is not bothering him and you only have this one occurance and it resolves itself....but just keep an eye on it and him, any itching, reactions, etc. etc. as well as his overall skin condition or fleas/mites etc. and for any more little bumps which I'm sure you will.

well, doesn't look like a scab i would have but i guess that is what it was. the part that came off (with hair attached) was mostly white and kinda clumpy. the part left was pink-ish in color and was semi-protruding (like a small bump).Traci wrote:Jason could you be alittle more descriptive? Was it a scab or? Color? What area on the body did you find it?
D~'s thoughts seem to follow what may have happened. rocky likes to tumble on java and usually java will try to dig her back claws of feline fury in to him.
i'll post a picture later tonight for futher clarification. thanks.
pictures of the area
the area that was left from pulling the hair and scab off
the hair clump that came off from the area above
thanks again.

Well, that's a fairly large clump of fur! But, just judging from the pics, it looks like it was from a prior scab, probably from Java's claws, and you just didn't notice it until the skin and follicles died off and it was bound to scab off. I suspect the area of skin left is healthy looking, no punctures or anything, so just keep an eye on it for now. You can run your hands through his fur and check for other areas like it, and if you find more, you might want to get him checked on the offchance it could be flea-allergy dermatitis, or a reaction to something else (food allergy or environmental allergy)
