My cat can't use it's back legs?

Post by Shelby »

My 1 1/2 yr. old baby is dragging his back legs around. He has been trying to walk on them today but with no success. He was walking one day and the next morning he wasn't.it has been 2 days now. Doesn't seem to be in any pain, eating fine, going to the bathroom (of course he gets it all over himself). He can move his legs and tail so I know he can feel them. What do i do? He has had alot of trouble in the passed with his back.He got out and the vet thought it was broke but said there was nothing he could do.

Thanks for your help,
Shelby

you have some sort of spinal trauma,,, i would get him into a vet ASAP and if nothing else try to get a steroid shot into him to reduce the pressure or inflamation where ever it is...between now and when you see the vet keep exercising his back legs...you can do this my massage, pushing on the foot or pinching the tow lightly to cause himn to pull the legs up, pinching the tail also to keep that exercised...but get him seen as soon as you can before and more pressure or damage can occur....

Get kitty to nearest emergency vet please!

There are various causes to paralysis, but given your kitty's history, you don't have time to waste, this could be a compressed nerve or even a disc injury he might have developed by a trauma unbeknownst to you. Depending on the extent of the problem depends on emergency treatment success, some of these conditions can be treated with agressive steroid approaches and supportive care if caught within first 6-8 hours.

This could also be a thromboembolism or organ failure or severe infection, only your vet can tell you.

Please, to your nearest ER vet ASAP.

After you get him checked out you can try http://www.handicappedpets.com and abledogs.net (which is NOT limited to dogs and which has a VERY active email listserve).

YEs by all mean to an ER vet right away. Your vet saying nothing could be done is just plain crazy. There are surgeons and treatments that CAN be done.

Secondly I cannot imagine your cat NOT being in pain from this. You need a responsible vet or animal hospital immediately.

My 5 year old female's back leg was collapsing, and she had an operation that literally saved her to correct a bad knee. She is running around now, using her litter box etc. Did you know without those back legs it is hard for them to use their litterbox, infact I am surprised your kitty can have bowl movements without severe pain. My cat had difficulty having stools until her operation.

Please get kitty seen and out of pain.

Mona, HOneybun, and Chloe :(
