cat bit

Post by erica_princess1 »

A couple days ago my cat would always hide under the bed. About two days ago we finally saw her and she had one side of her face swollen, a little lower than her ear. We couldn't see what it was but the next day the hair was stick together and it looked like the pus of the bumb had come out. So we cut the hair and underneath was a big purple bump. She had about 3 teeth marks and one which was by her ear and she kept twitching it. She also hadn't been eating and felt very light. Today she began eating again. We cleaned the wound with peroxide and salt with water and placed some animal cream on it but she would scratch the wound. Today the wound had dry places with blood. We were cleaning the wound again but she heard the vacuum (which she is very afraid of) we didn't like her go and she urniated on us. Later today she urniated in a room which she never does. Princess is an indoor cat. Princess has never really been the cudly type and will scratch and get mad easily. For some time now we have been fedding some cats outside. Sometimes Princess sees the cats and chases them or fights with them. Princess does not like other cats. I do not know if she was bitting by another cat or what we want to aviod taking her to the vet because we do not have the money. We don't know exactly what it is but need some help. Thanx

You cannot avoid taking Princess to the vet...where there is a will, there is a way. (ask a friend or family member for help with $)

Abcesses, particularly those caused by bite and puncture wounds, are very serious, and will cause infection, given the location and the number of puncture wounds, you cannot afford NOT to get her to your vet immediately. Infection, if not treated properly, can enter the bloodstream and cause worsening infection, more symptoms, and even necrosis of skin and tissue. Abcesses are also excruciatingly painful, cause fevers and may cause severe anorexia that will cause further problems.

DO NOT delay....get Princess to your vet IMMEDIATELY for proper care and treatment of this wound. Your vet will clean it, flush it, and will prescribe oral antibiotics.

You say she is indoors, but obviously, she is outdoors chasing the strays...keep her strictly indoors only, and accidents like this will be prevented. Again, don't wait, she's depending on you to get this wound addressed and treated promptly/properly.

Sounds like an abcess and it probably is the result of one of the feral (stray) cats biting her in a fight. I'm afraid you should find the funds to have a vet take a look at your cat because the abcess is an infection which can be systemic (infect the entire body) and she will most likely need a course of antibiotics.

Also, the abcess may heal over on the outside but not the inside and fill up again - it will probably need to be opened by a vet and the wound scraped inside then sutured closed and it may need a drain tube.

Feral cats can be the carriers of some pretty serious diseases and when your cat fights with them, she could become infected. She needs to be checked by a vet for transmittible diseases and be vaccinated to safe gaurd her health and life.

To avoid this kind of problem for happening again (and it will), I suggest that you stop feeding stray cats in your yard - your cat is protecting her property against them. Also, it would be best to keep your cat inside to avoid contact with strays. The big problem is in feeding stray cats - once they get used to a food source being there, they will fight for it.

Hi erica_princess, I'm so sorry that your cat is hurt. Please follow the others' advice and get your kitty to the vet as soon as you can. If she is losing weight, then she could also develop even more serious problems - so it's best to deal with the infection right away, it will be cheaper in the long run. Call all the vets in your area and ask if they will accept a payment plan, or if any have reduced rates for financial need. Your kitty might not survive this if she doesn't get seen by a vet soon, preferably today, so please try, okay?
