Traci, davet, Mona? You ever run across this type of situation before?
Traci this is an email I just received:
" have a 12 year old male cat who has developed odd behavior at the same time each year for the past 3 years. He will stop using his litter box, and only stay on top of furniture. His eyes are dialated and he acts as if the floor is painful or something. He only gets down from the piano or whatever his chosen spot is to eat and to use the bathroom right where he gets down. . And he sheds.......everwhere. I can't believe he doesn't go bald. And the hair balls are lovely. He becomes less affectionate with everyone. Never agressive but not himself at all. I thought it was flea treatments last year. Maybe he was "drugged up" on them. I took him to the vet and they couldn't find anything wrong. Have you ever heard of this?? Thanks "

The vet not finding anything wrong depends on what testing was done (we're talking about a 12 year-old-kitty)....were individualized tests mentioned?
I would suggest something in the environment, but don't know if the owner is associating this entirely to one time a year, or if there have been other times she simply has not noticed. As for the floor, would ask about recent chemicals used to clean it, or remodelling, or? What other changes in the environment have occured, especially if there was an event in particular that only occurs once a year (a family reunion? school activities? other stresses?)
As for the flea meds, what flea meds is she using for this kitty, and is she spot treating areas in the home? "Drugged-up" would indicate kitty ingested a product, whether it was incorrectly applied to his fur or that it was a toxic product or ingested some other type toxin in the environment.
If blood profiling was not done, I'd strongly suggest it immediately. Particularly a senior profile, thryoid function testing and urinalysis. Also x-rays to determine any potential arthritic conditions.
