Bot Flys

Post by Mona »

I heard on the news today on my way to work, that Bot Flys are breeding heavily in SW Florida affecting squirrels. So they could certainly affect cats and dogs outside. It could last for a few weeks. They lay their larvae under the skin causing itching and possibly infection.

Just a warning to those who let their cats/dogs outside, please check them over, or better yet keep them inside for a while.

just an aside but if you do se a bot fly and it has burrowed into the skin of an animal, any animal, do not sqush it out, go to a vet and have him kill it first then take it out with forceps..if it is squshed (squeshed: however) it may break and cause a sever anaphylactic reaction...so play it safe and get it killed before it is forceps removed....the reaction does not always occur but when it does it is not a fun thing for the pet
