Stressed Kitty?
Stressed Kitty?
One of my neighbors has a long-haired cat (very long: Persian maybe?) that is calico in color. She is 7 or 8 years old, and her name is Sassy. Very recently, she has started to scratch herself to the point where she is developing scabs beneath her fur on her neck and back. Now, they told me that they had a lot of visitors over for the weekend, and the problem started right after this period. Could she be stressed? She has also started to act distant toward them, hiding in different places and not coming when called. What could be the problem? Is is anything serious? Please help!

Re: Stressed Kitty?
Ashley, any kitty over the age of 6 or 7 should receive an annual complete blood profile to check for underlying health conditions that may be common for kitties this age.
The stress she endured over the weekend could fast manifest into a health concern. The scratching is not a good thing and could indicate just about anything, not particularly stress only. Please advise your neighbor to get her seen by her vet immediately, get a full blood profile done (including thyroid function and urinalysis), and take it from there. Your neighbor first needs to know her general health condition at this point and to keep abreast of any underling condition that may be surfacing as a result of the stress.

Traci, is it possible maybe that she could just have dry skin?
