Please help, we think our cat may be dying! :(
Hello all and thanks for reading my question.
My sister found a mommy cat and helped her raise some kittens; she took care of them for about six weeks. My wife saw one and fell in love so I surprised her with it one day, it was doing fine. Very playful and VERY hyper! But one morning out of nowhere it couldn’t even walk or plan with its fav toy (a plastic bag). My first thought was maybe worms or poison. Well about 2 days later we checked its litter box and found a roundworm (maybe 3”-3.5” long) so right away I went to a local wal mart and got some worm treatment (Piperazine Adipate) so we mixed one capsule in the cat’s food, no luck that night. So we repeated the process the next day as instructed by the directions, still nothing. So I went to 1800petmeds.com and ordered a different kind of treatment (Homeo Pet Worm Clear) it hasn’t got here yet but my worries are… first off after I gave it the first worm treatment I later read on yahoo pets that it has no result in kittens with roundworms. Our cat is now at the point to where it will bath its self but its fur is not as healthy looking as it was.It doesnt eat half as much. It has almost no vale movement at all when it urinates it only can let out a tiny little bit, as for number 2… maybe once per day and almost none then! It’s acting very drained and weak. We took it to the vet today and he wouldn’t even touch it! Because he said we have to wait 10 days after we treated it with the treatment before he will give it any more help of any kind, so I asked him how can we at least make it have a vale movement and he said to buy some mineral oil and give it 2 tablespoons per day. But everywhere I read says not to do that. Please help, out kitty won’t make it 10 days if he can’t go to the bathroom! What should I do? Keep giving it mineral oil; wait for the pet meds product to come in,??? Our kitten is my wife’s life, she thinks of it has her kid and it breaks her heart as well as mine please respond.
Casey
PS: the cat is about 10-11 weeks old (give or take) and the only Strongid-T i can find is for horses! if this is what i need can someone please give me a good site to buy this?

Re: Please help, we think our cat may be dying! :(
Please do not delay to take your cat to an emergency vet. Your cat is in bad shape and must have treatment. Do not allow this vet to send you home without help. Your cat needs to see another vet. In the future, when there is ever any doubt, get your cat to a vet for proper diagnosis. Please, let us know what you find out, but again, you MUST get this cat some help. Cats need proper health care. It is good that you learn as much as you can so that you can work WITH a veterinarian, but not in the vet's place. I hope that you can get the proper help from someone else. Good luck.

Re: Please help, we think our cat may be dying! :(
you kitten needs immediate vet attention. the over the counter products may have even caused more damage (not sure of course).
stop trying to treat this on your own and get this kitten to a vet or emergency vet now, preferrably a different one that can appreciate the seriousness of the situation.
do this right now! be sure to tell this new vet everything you know about....a caring vet will listen to the details for proper diagnosis and treatment.

I agree the cat needs to see a vet ASAP. Do not wait...your cat is depending on you. Please seek out another vet and let us know how things go.

Never ever use an over the counter preparation for anything.
As others have stated, you must get to an ER vet to save this kitten.
Good luck.

I'm sorry your little is om such frail health. I do agree with the others that a new vet must see him imediately. Going by your description of him, he may need some IV therapy. Not eating isn't good at all. He could develop hepatic lipidosis (a severe liver condition that is difficult to treat). It doesn't take very long for this condition to creep up on a kitty not eating enough. I hope you will be able to get some vet to work with you with payment plans. Please keep us posted, ok?
Kitty kisses,
Debbie

Never use mineral oil for cats, it is not excreted from the body fast enough and can rob the colon of vital mucosa necessary to smooth the way for normal bowel movements.
Never buy over-the-counter products for pets for ANY reason, ever! They are often toxic (and fatal), and ineffective....you wasted your money twice, the only solution is seeing a NEW vet, and at an emergency facility NOW!
After you've gotten your kitten to a competent, responsible vet and treated effectively, read this.....Just Say No which includes information on petmedexpress violations, other internet pharmacy problems, as well as flea and tick products that are harmful to cats.

Update: Thanks for all the advice guys! As of now I thought I would give you all an update. Our kitten is eating better (much like it was in the past) and it is having normal movements… I have yet so see any more roundworms surface, is that normal? Also its acting better, its starting to play somewhat but not as much. I am guessing its resting up, as far as a new vet we did see one but had to go out of state to get a good one! I live pretty much on the border of ky and va so it wasn’t that bad of a trip anyway (it was worth it). The only thing that I am questing as of now is why have I yet to see any more worms pass through its body? Surly it was more than one. And why is it not playful as it was? Does it just need to rest up? These are the last two questions I have. Thanks again for all of the advice. I will keep you updated of any changes
Thanks again!
Casey
PS: sorry if my grammer is off, I have been up all night making sure our little furry friend is doing ok, its 6:15AM so I think tis time to hit the bed…
