Wheat Litter?

Post by kellie »

I am looking in to how to care for new kittens and I came across this. I hear that clay litter is not safe for kittens because they tend to eat their litter and clay litter can obstruct their intestines. Is this true? Is clay litter dangerous for kittens? I hear wheat litter is a safe alternative...what do you think?

Edit 8/21: Thanks a lot for the info, I was really wondering about this... :D

Yes,well I use S'Wheatscoop for my kitten Chloe as she eats everything in sight. It is safe and works quite well for her, and clumps etc.

When she is older I will switch to the clumping at around 6-8 months.

Mona is right..use it until your kitten stop eating the stuffs. A lot of kittens would eat anything out of sight, just like human toddlers!!! But there are a very few kittens snobbing around the litterboxes and foods thinking they're far more "rich". :o I seen a lot myself lately, one snob kitten, one "I don't care" attitude kitten, one hillbilly kitten, one "I can eat anything if I wanna" attitude kitten, etc....odd, just like us humans.

Make sure that you check on 'em when they're doing their job in the litterbox after you poured the S'WheatScoop into the litterbox. Just as Mona suggested, use it until they break their habits of eating stuffs, then you can change the clumping litter. Or you may want to keep using S'WheatScoop for the rest of their lives. Have fun with kiddos, they love to drive ppl nuts. lol. Smile please. :)

I use SwheatScoop and love it. It is biodegradable, flushable and there is less dust. It clumps well too. I originally started using it when my cats were kittens out of fear that the clay would cause health problems. My cats are one and a half now and I'm not planning to switch. I have found, however, that it is a bit more difficult to remove clumps from the bottom of the box. As a solution I spray the bottom with Pam cooking spray and use a paint scaper along the bottom of the box to loosen up all clumps before scooping. This works very well.

Another Kate for Sweatscoop! Actually, as far as I know, it's only the *clumping* clay litter which is dangerous for kittens. Non-clumping litter is fine (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
