Cat litter recommendations

Post by Delilah's pal »

I always have used regular clumpable litter for my cats, but in my new apartment my cat's litter box is in the same room as my computer and some other electronic equipment, and I'm concerned about dust. I've tried wheat-based litter, but it was still quite dusty. I then went to paper-based litter, which was great---no dust---but it wasn't clumpable, plus the little pellets were hard to distinguish from feces. I'm now trying cedar-based litter, which claims to be 99.9% dust free (where do they come up with these figures?!) but still seems pretty dusty to me. It also smells perfumed, which I'm trying to avoid. Delilah is a gentle, easy going cat who has been a good sport about all this experimentation, but I'd like to find a litter and stay with it. Can anyone recommend a type of litter that is dust-free, or at least low on dust, and is also clumpable and non-scented? Delilah and I will both be grateful for your advice. Thanks.[/img]

My breeder uses hard wood pellets (the ones used for pellet stoves). They cost $3 for a 40 lb bag if you get it at a place like Home Depot or somewhere like that. If you buy it at a pet store, they will charge the same as for other litters. Basically, you only scoop out the poop, and then you leave the rest. The pellets crumble into sawdust when they are urinated on. I understand why my breeder loves it, as she can get it so cheap and it is so safe for newborn kittens. She is also allergic to the dust in regular litters.

Instead of tons of scooping, I guess you just empty the whole box out frequently. I personally did not like it. The pellets were very dust free, and they did control the urine smell pretty good.

I just mentally don't like the idea of urine sawdust. I prefer the clumping litter where I can scoop everything out. I was very worried my two Tonks would not want to switch over to clumping litter, (knock on wood) so far they are doing fine. (One is 11 months old and the other is almost 3 years old.)

I have tried them all myself, the wheat the pellets etc.

I did not like the wood pellet type at and my cat did not like it. I found that the paper litters did not clump.

I used to use Scoop Away no trak unscented, but found it got dusty maybe from a new formulation.

Traci recommended Tidy Cat and I tried the "Tidy Cat Crystal Blend" and love it. It is dust free and odor free, both my cat use the same both sometimes and I scoop frequently but I really like it and will continue to use it. My older cat Honeybun, (5yrs) was sneezing from the other litter, and now she has stopped sneezing.

Read about it at this link:

That is my two cents worth, hope it helps.

I also love Tidy Cats Crystals Blend. I have tried Feline Pine pellets, Scoop Away, Fresh Step and something else (can't remember) and the Tidy Cats is by far the best. I only have one cat but I got the multiple cat formula anyway and it is fabulous. I also have my litter box in my computer room and there is less dust in this room than in my living room. I highly recommend Tidy Cats!
