Hi,
I have a big problem with my 6 year old neutered female...she is peeing in my hallway, behind my television...it happens worse in the summer when the carpet is humid/ I know I need to replace it...but can't right now...
I've already had her to the vet, no urinary tract problems...she will use the box for solids...and soemtimes, will pee there...but I think with the carpet smell, it's just a battle...
But, I can't live like this! I've spent a ton of money, nature's miracle, urineout powder....removed the padding, cleaned til I'm blue in the face...
am thinking of buying a kennel and confining her, short of putting her to sleep....are there any other suggestions?
If I can't get it under control, the animal will have to go!
Please help...

If your vet has ruled out any physical problems, then try giving her more than one litterbox - one to urinate in, one to poop in. Be sure they are cleaned on a daily basis. Cats will go elsewhere if the litterbox is dirty and full.
If your carpet is as bad as you say, they it obviously needs to be taken up and discarded. She's is still picking up the scent. Try putting a litterbox in one of the areas of the carpet that she's gone it. Not sure if that will do the trick but it's worth a try.
Seek an opinion from a second vet if need be.

My suggestion is to find her another home if you don't have the patience to deal with it. Having a cat or any other pet is a life long commitment. It is not one that can be discarded when it gets out of control. This cat is depending on you for it's care and well-being all of the time. Opting to confine her in a kennel or put her to sleep because of this problem is absurd and a cop out. I don't mean to sound harsh, or perhaps I do. Would you confine a 6 year old bed wetting boy to a kennel or worse, euthanize him because his accidents were out of control?am thinking of buying a kennel and confining her, short of putting her to sleep....are there any other suggestions?

I just read your other post indicating that you have removed the top of your litterbox and so far, so good with your cat going inside of it. If you don't have a second box, perhaps another one will give her a better option than going on your floors.
You stated you loved your cat and I'm sure you do. My previous post may have been harsh, but it was only in reply to a harsh suggestion.

There are plenty of things that you can try before you need to do anything drastic. I agree with Cleo, please try a second litter box! Make it a nice big roomy one, put it in a location that she can get to easily but is private and not right next to her other box. It's a cheap solution if that's the problem.
Also, you may want to try different types of litter - she might not like the way this one smells or feels. Introduce any new litter slowly. And make sure her box is always clean; she might not want to "go" in a box that already has poop in it.
You may need to examine any stress that is being introduced into your cats life. Try to reduce her stress any way you can. Don't yell at her or respond harshly when she pees on the carpet, and make sure she always has a safe space in the house to retreat to when things are hectic. Is something else different during the summer, like kids being home?
About the carpets, have you tried a product like Nature's Miracle to get the smell out?

I know I sound like a mean cat owner...but I do love this cat. I took her in for my brother 4 years ago who had to move...and she really is a wonderful pet. She doesn't scratch or bite, and is a nice addition to our home. It's just that I've been on my hands and knees all summer long, it gets to be a bit of a drag. Last night she was downstairs with me and she seemed so happy to be with me and I knew I could never, ever put her down!
yes, things are different in the summer/ I'm a teacher (er, see handle!) and her litter box is down stairs around the corner of the stairs...very private during the year but when the kids are home, they are up and down stairs alot and maybe this freaks her out??? They are doing the video game things, hooting and hollering. She (molly the cat) enjoys being upstairs where it's less hectic, to say the least... So, coupled with the yucky carpet (i'm saving to get new stuff and will treat the subfloor, too, before it's laid down) and the change, that's probably it.
She went (peed ) in her box today (I left her down for the night, not confined, promise..) so leaving the litter box lid off seemed to be a good thing perhaps! Like I said, I had to laugh that the minute I took it off, she jumped right in and did her biz while I was watching....maybe that lid was bothersome for her?

I don't think you're a mean cat owner... we just get worried because you can never be sure how serious someone is when they bring up putting a cat to sleep!
It's great that she's going in the box without the lid.
I would still try to get another box, and put it somewhere upstairs, since it sounds like that's where she feels the safest. Is there any place out of the way upstairs that you could put it? It doesn't have to be exactly where she has been peeing, but it would help if you could put the box close by where the accidents are happening.
