What to feed a cat without teeth

Post by GeoRuth »

Our fourteen year old cat lost five more teeth. We have been feeding her
cans of Friskies and other brands but she doesn't seem able to keep
food down. Was wondering if anyone has suggestions on what can be
fed. She is an old cat I know but other than the barfing problem she
is still playful and active. From kitten to senior cat she was fed Science
Diet and until the vet had to remove more teeth, she was being fed
Science Diet senior.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried a smoother food, like Iams or Nutro Kitten is very palatable and smooth food and can be mixed with water to make a lapable paste. Just a thought.

If she's "barfing" Friskies it can be a real mess if I'm not mistaken ... since there are orange dyes in it? Maybe that's not so with the canned. If you get a food with no dyes (like the ones Mona has suggested), it won't stain your carpet/couch/whatever when it comes back up.

Guess that doesn't help your real problem, but...

Were the tooth extractions done due to diseased teeth, or does she have stomatitis, or??? Would help to know her condition before advising too much.

In the immediate sense, ask your vet for Hill's Rx A/D, it is an acute recovery diet that is excellent for dental patients. It is not grainy or texturized, is easy to mix with water for easy lapping, and is high in protein and caloric content (if kitty has liver or kidney problems, this would NOT be an ideal diet, but if she's otherwise healthy, talk to your vet about it)

HI there, I'm in the Uk and here we have a liquid diet in a tin that's mainly used for poorly animals but I'm sure it would be okay for your cat. It's only available from a vet here. I think it was called Liqui-Vite. Perhaps someone here knows of one or your vet. You could also get a cheap blender and puree your cats normal food. He may not be keeping it down cos he's having to swallow lumps due to inability to chew.Hope this helps, Hugs Ann x
