Question about conofite
Traci (or others), I remember you've posted before that conofite (sp?) is recommended for ringworm. Is it a topical treatment? Can it be applied to spots right above the eye?
It seems every time I bring home a new cat, she breaks out in ringworm a day or two later.

Re: Question about conofite
It's available in lotion or cream, and what I recommend for ringworm, as opposed to griseofulvicin (which I detest), or other topicals.
As for above the eye, should be ok, used sparingly, but double-check with your vet, and I am assuming she has been tested and diagnosed? If not, don't apply anything without a skin scrape first (wood's lamp or black light is not always sufficient for diagnosis)

Re: Question about conofite
She hasn't been tested yet, but she needs another FVCRP soon, so I'm going to ask our vet about conofite when we take her in. Last time he gave us LymDip, which didn't seem to work (so I want to be armed with info about conofite).
The foster's other cats did have ringworm, but Pele didn't have any symptoms when we got her - but maybe the stress of moving made it flare up? I talked to one of the techs at my vets, who told me to put OTC Tinactin on it (!) - Of course I am NOT going to put Tinactin or any other medication meant for humans on my cat, just to be very clear. I told her it was over the eye, and she said "Um, okay then, maybe not ..." So then I asked at what point should I bring her in to see the vet, and she didn't have a good answer. I am giving both kitties Program (135 mg) once every two weeks, which worked for Kobi last time we dealt with this.

Re: Question about conofite
Actually, you should be concerned for your other cats and yourself too, as you know, ringworm can be so easily passed between species.
Yes, stress can exacerbate the problem, she could have been developing it right at the time you got her. If the area above the eye is the only area, you might not be dealing with ringworm at all, but I wouldn't want to take chances. You didn't say when her appointment for vaccs was, but perhaps you can get her in sooner for just a quick exam and confirmation on the ringworm. Or, you could keep an eye on the area, watch for other spots, until her scheduled appt, but with the history of her foster home, use your best judgement.

Re: Question about conofite
We don't have an appt for vaccines yet - we don't have her other vet records from the rescue agcy yet (they're going to mail them) so we don't know exactly when she's due for the next one. But I'm going to get her in next week, whether or not we get the records.
As for us... I've got some Tinactin for us, just in case.

Re: Question about conofite
We've got an appointment tomorrow morning ... looks like it's going to be a little-of-everything trip. FVRCP Vaccine, ringworm test and meds, and this morning I saw some blood in her somewhat loose stool, so it looks like we'll be getting a fecal, too. Poor thing!
I was thinking of having her microchipped, too (just in case she were to ever escape outside) but that might be too much trauma all at once. Out of curiosity, should we call in advance to make sure they're set up for a microchipping, or can we ask for it once we get there?

Re: Question about conofite
Poor baby.....Kate, the blood in the stool could just be stress, but in any event, glad you're getting her thoroughly checked out.
As for the microchipping, if they provide the service, they should have all the equipment available. And I don't think you should be concerned with the added stress of a microchip, it's not really invasive, nor does it give a reaction like vaccines. However, because it's given in the general area of the FVRCP, she could be alittle extra sore. Just ask your vet if he suggests waiting maybe an additional week or so for microchipping.

Re: Question about conofite
I hope everything works out ok for you. It is a shame this had to happen.
My newest kitten Chloe, was tested for disease, vaccinated, microchipped and spayed before we took her home. I as a little shocked, but now I am glad this all occurred. She is disease and worm free!! My vet dewormed her just incase with Strongid and did a float and saw no coccidia.
It pays to have them checked. I am routing for her.

Re: Question about conofite
Thanks so much to both of you ... we just got back from the vet. He says she looks perfect except for the ringworm (confirmed) and he wanted us to just do the LymDip, but I pleaded and got some conofite too (it's bad when you have to work to convince your vet to let you give him more money). AND, she took her injection well, and got wormed... he didn't think doing a fecal was necessary, that the worm meds would take care of everything, and also told us "don't waste your money" on the microchipping. And of course she got weighed - she's only 3 pounds and 14.5 ounces; what a tiny little girl!
So we're (only) out $100 for the whole visit, and happily back at home.
Kobi, however, is not at all happy with the way Pele smells, especially after putting the conofite lotion on her forehead, so we're going to separate them for another day while we're at work.

Re: Question about conofite
Traci, I'm sorry to bug you again about this... Pele seems to be in a lot of pain when I put the conofite lotion on her lesion. I'm putting a drop on my finger and then putting it on her lesion (above her left eye), being careful not to get it in her eye. But she has open sores there, and either the medicine or my rubbing it onto her skin seems to be really painful for her. Do you know if it's okay to put this on open lesions? I looked all over the 'net and couldn't even find any info at the manufacturer's website.
