Whiskers
Whiskers
My name is pam and my kitty is Thomas O'Malley. the problem is his whiskers keep falling out. he has big long white whiskers and I am concerned it may be a health problem. they have not all fallen out but several have. my husband was petting him today and one came out in his hand. he is an indoor cat about 4yrs, well spoiled. he eats Science Diet A/D formular from the vet, no table scraps excepe an occasional cantaope bite. he has a friend who is also well spoiled his name is CJ, he is about 4 1/2 to 5. they are both health and do not fight. they chase each other but no fighting. is this normal? (the whiskers falling out) and will they grow back? thanks for being here this is really great. pam
Re: Whiskers
no idea why he whikers are fallin out..i don't know of a whisker falling out disease but have seen it happen..the whisker are imbedded in a little pool of blood.. i think referrred to as vibrisi (will have to check that) but as long as the cat is indoors i don't think you have a problem because they are used to escort the cat through small spaces and i suspect your cats know all the spaces....just have no idea..
Re: Whiskers here we go
Vibrissa
: one of the stiff hairs that are located especially about the nostrils or on other parts of the face in many mammals and that often serve as tactile organs

Re: Whiskers
The whiskers are probably nothing to worry about, but do keep an eye on him for any other signs of health problems.
I'm curious, you said he was healthy, but he's on prescription A/D, what for? This is an acute recovery diet, am curious if you're using it for maintenance, or for what purpose?

Re: Whiskers
thanks everyone for the response, Tracy, my vet put my cats on it about a year ago, Thomas was throughing up a little to often. seems to have done the trick. pam
Re: Whiskers
Pam, just want to confirm, are you sure it's A/D? If so, you might want to monitor his weight more frequently, because A/D is very high in protein and calories, you don't want him gaining too much weight, nor too quickly.
If your vet hasn't discussed this with you, ask him about hypoallergenic diets you can try for the vomiting episodes. There are several varieties of veterinary diets available for this purpose. You could even try a hairball diet if your vet thinks it might be useful in your kitty's situation.
