OK to feed different "flavors" of wet kitten food?
OK to feed different "flavors" of wet kitten food?
I know it is not a good practice to change foods, but what about flavors? I am feeding Layla wet Science Diet kitten foods and she is doing very well on it. Right now she gets the turkey and gibblets flavor but also likes the salmon flavor. Should I stick with a single flavor or is it OK to switch every other week or so to add some new flavors? [/list]

As long as you stick with the same brand (e.g. Science Diet brand), offering different flavors in the same brand is fine. Just remember, don't feed too many fish varieties too often (fish variety once a week is ok, just don't do it every day)

What is the reason for that, Traci? I'm just curious...

The fish, you mean? Because excess feeding of fish can cause pansteatitis, deplete other minerals, etc. That said, depending on the source and quality of the fish, it can be helpful for some cats with food allergies (e.g. if they are sensitive to chicken, beef etc)
If you meant different brands, it's not recommended because different brands have different formulations of vitamins/minerals and use different sources of ingredients.

Thanks Traci! I was not aware of the fish thing so that is good to know! She doesn't really seem to be too intrigued by anything fishy so I guess that is a good thing. Thanks again for the reply.

Yes, I meant the fish thing...I had never heard that before. Thanks!

I have always avoided fish if I can, but why they heck do so many cat foods contain it? As far as switching between brands, I've always tried to avoid that but Lucy went through a phase where she would eat one brand for a day and then would refuse it the next day...so I had to switch brands to get her to eat. Now she's doing fine and eats Iams on a regular basis. It's the only food I can get her to eat. I haven't tried the lower end brands because I didn't dare get her hooked on Friskies
