FLUTD - behavior changes after surgery?
In January 2003 my cat had urinary blockage and required surgery. He no longer has a penis or testicles. It is now July and for the past week I have noticed a change in his behavior. I thought he was sick so I brought him to the vet. Urine, blood and fecal tests came back fine. X-ray only revealed that he may be constipated (there was a lot of poop in him). I am giving him Petromalt hairball remedy at the vet's suggestion to help with the pooping. But I'm not convinced that is the reason my cat doesn't look right. Is it possible that he is feelign the effects of having no more testosterone in his system? Sort of like a male-cat-menopause? If there is such a thing. My cat looks sad. His eyes are usually alert or looking at me with lovey eyes. Now he just looks sad. His meow is not as loud as it used to be and he meows differently and at unusual times (times he wouldn't normally meow). Hard to explain. He is eating and drinking and peeing fine. He pooped 2 very small poops yesterday morning and so far none today. And will play with me when I take out his toys. Maybe he is just constipated, maybe I'm making too much of this. I just worry about him and hate to see him look so sad. Anyone have any advice?

The only advice I can give you is to call you vet if you do not think your kitty is getting better to determine if other treatment to relieve the constipation is warranted. You can always take your kitty to another vet for a second opinion too.
My cat Smokey had this surgery earlier this year and I haven't seen a chemically related behaviorial change that you describe with him. Since every cat is different, ths is not to say that your guy may be experiencing something related to his surgery.
Hopefully, he is feeling better..

my rocky had the p/u this year as well. for him, the behavior changes were for the better...appears more happy and active than before. when i got him, i believe his blocking and irratation had already started.
the issues of "male-cat-menopause" are not valid, from what i know in the chemical sense. however, rocky does look "down there" more often than he ever did before...usually like he is inspecting...sometimes cleaning.
as your vet had probably told you, keep close eyes on him...the uti's are more susceptible post p/u given the new size and shortening.
with all vet visits, if you feel a second opinion is needed then dont hesitate.
