Help! Goldie has multiple abcesses!

We have an orange male tabby named Goldie who is about 10 months old. About 5 weeks ago we took Goldie to the vet to have a back toe looked at that had what turned out to be an abcess. His paw was so swollen he could not walk on it. He was an indoor, occasionally outdoor cat, and we had him neutered at that vet visit. He was put on antibiotics, which were given faithfully for two weeks, however he continued to develop abcesses all over the body. These became gaping, oozing wounds. He was put on stronger antibiotic and the wounds have started to close. However, now the vet tells us that the abcesses are becoming internal and to stay on the anitibiotics until it has run its course. He has not been let out at all since. In the meantime, the cat is very sick, lethargic, and obviously in a lot of pain. His front leg is very swollen and he cannot walk on it. These are apparently from bacteria that he probably got fighting with another cat. We've been to the vet about 4 times and keep being told that he should be okay, but if I didn't know better, I would say he looks as though he might not make it. ANY ADVICE???????????

Get Goldie to another vet ASAP.....it sounds like your vet is not doing enough. Also, you need to test for, and determine if these are soft-tissue abcesses or something more severe, such as fungal disease (i.e., cryptococcosis), eosinophilic granuloma complex, or immunological (i.e., pemphigus), all of which would require an agressive treatment approach.

It sounds like internal sepsis has occured, which is not responding to the type of antibiotic, but regardless, please, get kitty to a NEW vet and rule out the above mentioned disease potentials immediately, because left undetected and unproperly treated, they can only get worse, and possibly life-threatening. I don't know what antibiotics your vet has prescribed, nor any other treatment approach, but it's not working, and your kitty is declining rapidly. DON'T WAIT, see a new, more experienced feline only vet TODAY!!

I agree with Traci, about the internal sepsis (blood poisoning). I have experience with this with humans, and you cannot delay. An IV antibiotic will be the action needed to be taken immeidately. It is life threatening!! Go now to new vet or to an ER vet. Please update.
