My cat has hurt him selfe he has a cut allong the side of his face starting by his eye not deep but it did bleed the bleadding has almost stopped.
background I am assigned to Djibouti africa and their is no 24 hour vet service the fastes i could get him to a vet is tomarrow at 1200 it is 2341 now.
He was outside and it looks like he has injured hime selfe on the razerwire allong the wall of our house. I belive this is the cause because his face lookes like it has been shaved around the cut I have cleaned the woond the bestI can any help would be great. he is breathing ok but part of his left nistril may have been cut this is the partthat is still bleeding a little.
My cat is hurt and I need help.
First, you need to apply pressure to the area it is bleeding. Do NOT apply hard pressure, but light, firm pressure. Use a soft washcloth or soft towel to lightly, but firmly keep pressure on the bleeding area for a few minutes. Take away the cloth and watch to see if it continues to bleed. If it contnues to bleed, continue with pressure again for a slightly longer period of time, being careful with the nostril that you don't block breathing capability.
At this point, clean only with warm (but NOT hot) water and a soft, clean cloth. Do NOT rub, scrub or manipulate the area in any way, just lightly and gently dab at the area using a soft cloth that has been soaked in warm water. If the cat is agitated when you use a cloth to dab at the wound, then ONLY use a dropper of warm water to allow drops to fall into the wound and so kitties' head/face is tilted as such to allow the water to drain back out of the wound. This is called flushing, in the sense you are flushing the wound of debris, dirt, etc. Do this at least twice or three times a day until you get to the vet.
Do NOT use hydrogen peroxide or any other cleaning agent! These can actually be more damaging to wounds!
Keep him INDOORS ONLY, and make sure he is prevented from rubbing against anything dirty or where debris could enter the wound. Try to keep him from scratching the wound, you have to be diligent in watching for bleeding, or scratching at the wound, or rubbing against something that could add debris to the wound or further tear or rip the skin.
Do NOT give human medications, NO pain relievers, NOTHING of the sort! Only a veterinarian can give proper medications designed for cats. Most human medications are toxic to cats!
Call, get to a vet IMMEDIATELY so that the vet can address the wound, can properly clean it with a veterinary antiseptic, suture it closed if necessary and prescribe veterinary antibiotics for a cat, plus will instruct you on wound care at home.

Re: My cat is hurt and I need help.
Thank you for your advise I cleaned the would with a soft cloth and distilled water. the only drinking water available human or cat here in Djibouti. I was able to get him to the vet the next day Saturday at 1100. The vet said I cleaned the would very good and that the wound had closed. He was fine except for a slight fervor. He gave him an antibiotic shot and applied a salve to the wound. I need to put the save on each day until it is gone. My cat is now an indoor cat for good. I have to give him antibiotic pills for the next 5 days and if their is anything wrong with him I am to bring him back. I will take him back to the vet anyway after a week. He is doing fine now and is eating. Thank you for your help I followed the emergency care on this site and that did it until I could get him to the vet.
Thanks again cheers

Re: My cat is hurt and I need help.
I'm glad to hear kitty seems to be doing so well, thank you for taking such good care of him.
However, please keep a very close eye on the wound site, since bacteria can still form and cause an abcess, which would require your vet re-evaluate the wound and possibly additional treatment.
If the wound was caused by some type of metal, you need to watch the wound closely, as some metals can cause toxic poisoning when entering the bloodstream from such a wound. Please discuss that with your vet.

Re: My cat is hurt and I need help.
The wound was caused by razer wire that surrounds my home in Djibouti.
It is part of the property security and can not be removed. I do not own the property.
The cat despite numerous close calls keeps going through the wire chassing off other cats from the property. He is very territorial.
The mettle in this case is steal with rust and dirt. I told the vet this and as this is a common feature for the housing here so he knows the type and properties of the wire.
His would is healing nicely due to the ointment the scab is pealing off and the skin below it looks fine no redness at all.
The cat was adopted from a litter of kittens at my work. he is just over one year old and is fixed. He is black and despite his being fixed his very aggressive to strange cats and is very assertive but loving.
Cheers

Re: My cat is hurt and I need help.
If he has done this before, or is liable to do it again, perhaps the best thing to do is keep him indoors only, providing the indoors is cat-proof, interesting and entertaining environment for him, that your home is kept at a nice temp etc.
The problem with rust on metal materials is that it is toxic (think tetanus), and quick vet attention is necessary when wounds involve this material.
