Number of offspring ONE unspayed cat can have~anyone know?

Post by Cleo »

I once saw a pyramid type image of a cat and the number of cats that one can produce in a years time, basically from her offspring, their offspring and so on.

Does anyone have the website or image to show it? It was similar to this one but much clearer.

Thanks.

You can do a google image search. Here are a few you can check...

Also want to add, not to undermine pet overpopulation, but some sources and websites are very exaggerated in the numbers.

http://www.doghause.com/spaygraphics.asp (you can view 8 pages of graphics, I think there's an animated one similiar to what you're looking for)

Thanks Traci. I too had been thinking about this, after reading an item in today's news email from Dr. Phil Zeltzman

A mind boggling number:

"A breeding pair of cats can generate 420,000 kittens in just 7 years", according to wonderful Dr. Mary Lombardo, owner of the Mahoning Valley Animal Hospital in Andreas, PA, quoted in Times News (4-8-2008).

"That's why spaying and neutering pets is so important", she concluded at a recent presentation to promote a low-cost spay and neutering program for pets in Carbon County, PA. As we have discussed several times in this newsletter, it is also an easy way to prevent a bunch of medical conditions.

While Austin seems to be much more enlightened and trying hard to cope with the problems, in outlying suburbs/apartment complexes like mine there are some "outdoor" obviously unneutered cats around - and this is NOTHING compared to the part of the Gulf Coast hit by the major storms of 2005... I personally am no longer able to help physically with capturing strays etc., but I try to keep informed and donate what I can to TNR programs.

Thanks. The information is important but I fear it'll fall on deaf ears.
