Darned Hematomas
Darned Hematomas
Well...my old lady, Gypsy, will be at the vets in half an hour....I just got home from work to find that she has a bad hematoma that will need lanced and repaired...
please say a prayer that she makes it through the anesthesia....but then, she did a few months back when she was near to death and he removed teeth....and she is alot stronger...and obviously feistier....now...
I know her ears are clean so she did not do this to herself...she probably got into a boxing match with Munkie, knowing how those two go at it with each other....

Re: Darned Hematomas
Has she had one or more of them before? If so, and not properly addressed at the time, they can reoccur, simply by shaking or scratching (or undetected infection). Some hematomas reoccur despite treatment, unfortunately.
When was her last bloodwork? If within the last 6 months, it wouldn't hurt to get her a new blood profile or at least pre-anesthetic profile done first, K?
Gypsy is in my thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery, keep us updated?

Thanks Traci....she has never had one before, and she only had her teeth done umm...what...3 or 4 months ago, so she is good on bloodwork, and surprisingly for as old as she is, they said everything looked good...
Since she had 3/4 of a short can of canned food at about 8am this morning, he decided he would go ahead and do it right now, so he let me hold her while he gave her the knockout shot and shaved her ear...then I left her to get taken care of....however, while I was writing some post dated checks on the bill, he came out with a q-tip to look under the scope, and said it was just waxy buildup, no mites, so that is good....
She is probably already getting stitched up as I am typing this, and I will go pick her up tomorrow afternoon....
He could not believe that she was the same scrawny skin and bones cat I took in to have put down a few months ago, then he pulled teeth instead!!
She has really filled out and her eyes have brightened back up and she jumps and runs all over the place again....
edited at 3:10...vet tech called...the vet left the slide on the scope while he went back in to take care of Gypsy and when he came back later, he looked and there was ONE earmite on the slide that he figures crawled out of the waxy stuff....
Sooo...earmite treatments all around.....oh joys!!!!....NOT!!!!

well...my bobblehead old lady was waking up when I went to visit her...she was holding herself up but not on her legs yet, and was still quite floppy...
I will go get her tomorrow...and I did remind the vet tech that she does only eat canned food, and if it is not flaked or sliced or chopped, but more of a solid mass in the can, then they need to chop it, elsewise, gypsy will just lick and lick at it and never bite into it...

Re: Darned Hematomas
I hope she's feeling better soon. That's good that you reminded them about her eating habits.
Lucky you with the earmites, LOL! Yep, where there's one, there's more. Good luck. And let us know how your little "bobble-head" is doing.

I have to assume the lab (where the scope is), is squeaky clean, otherwise, any other slide or prep or sample nearby could have been tested during the time the vet was working with Gypsy. In other words, is he sure the earmite came from HER sample?
It might make sense since she probably scratched to the point of causing the hematoma, but I would have thought you'd notice that much sooner (the mites), if she was scratching all the time, or shaking her head or appearing uncomfortable. Better check the other cats' ears....

Re: Darned Hematomas
yes, the lab area is in a separate place, and kept very clean, there is only one scope...and this little mite was still moving about...the funny thing is, she really has NOT been scratching alot lately..but then, she LOVES to have her ears rubbed so I will sit with her on my lap and rub my thumb around the inner edges of her ears..not deep, just along those ridges...she LOVES it, even when she really does NOT have mites, so I guess my thumb was doing the scratching for her lately....and yes...the entire crew will get the ear mite regimen for the next few weeks....aughta be fun...
I thought I would have an empty lap tonight....but nope...Gump has taken over....hahaha

Re: Darned Hematomas
Thank you...Gypsy is home...I picked her up around 11:30...she had not touched the food they put in there...nice and fluffy and not a chunk she was cowering in the back of the kennel, and even when I opened the door and called to her, she refused to move....I reached in to pick her up and I swear I could have held her under her belly with one hand and she would still have held herself in that crouched position, that is how angry and upset she was...
but on the way home, she was quite vocal, and once we got into the house, she was ready to eat in her usual place on the desk beside me here....
She is a bit owly this evening...touchy with the others...but overall, she is doing fine....
Now to treat the others soon...but hubby is in bed sick...he is going to the doctor tomorrow....he thinks his pneumonia has returned
