Depressed Cat ??

Post by dfx »

Hi, this is my first post. I need some big help with my 15 pound, 6 yr old female maine coon mix. (Her name is Coco.)

Problem : She is vomiting her food up and recently urinated on the bed. (She has never had a spraying issue before.) She seems somewhat despondent and irritable. Is there anything I can do to make her happy and/or comfortable? She seems to be in good health but recently lost her companion. Here is my case:

- Coco is recent on all of her shots and was taken to the vet two weeks ago to be checked out. The vet looked her over and pronounced her in good health. She is returning for a followup booster next week.

- There is a new male cat in the home. He is an orange tabby, neutered, eight months old. Coco is not very happy with this new guy.

- Coco recently lost her life companion approximately one month ago. The two cats basically grew up together and the other one died unexpectedly. She seemed really upset but appeared to be recovering over the last couple weeks.

- We are moving to a new home and all of the moving boxes came out recently. She has been upset during a move before.

- Coco only eats Science Diet Adult food. No treats. No wet food. (It is available but she won't eat it.)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a lot of stress in her life adding up all at one time between the lost of her companion, addition of a new cat, and a move...this can take a toll on a cat. I'd highly recommend a second vet visit ASAP because she could easily develop hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver) if she stops eating or keeps vomiting. Otherwise you need to do everything in your power to keep some semblance of normalcy for her. But get her to the vet ASAP for a full panel of blood work to make sure all is well there...also a urinalysis since she is inappropriately urinating. It could be stress but you always, always, always, want to rule out any urinary issues first....Good luck! Let us know what you find out
