Very small cat

Post by IdgeesMom »

Hi, I'm new here. I have two cats, Idgee (feral kitten) and Ezra (adopted)

My daughter has a cat that she rescued about 6 months ago. Kitty is almost 1 year old now, but she's very tiny. She only weighs 5 pounds, and still looks like a kitten. She's perfectly proportioned, just very small. I call her the 'mutant kitty' :)

The vet is concerned that she hasn't gained any weight, but I think she'll always be very petite, perhaps because of not getting the proper nutrition when she was young.

Anyone here ever had or know of very small cats like her?

Can you see a new vet for a second opinion? (preferrably feline-onyl). YOU said she appears perfectly proportioned, yet your vet seems to think she is either underweight or not maintaining her optimal weight per her body structure, etc. That is of a conflicting nature, so a new vet may be better able to tell you her optimal weight, based on her age, health status, body size/structure, bone formation, and a body condtion score formulation, etc.

What are you (or should I say your daughter) feeding her? Do you know anything about her previous environment? (shelter vs fostered vs feral, etc)

A petite kitty is not necessarily prone to or predisposed to health problems, but you do need to find out if she is otherwise healthy and is at an optimal weight per factors above. If your vet is concerned, he may have reason to be, so maybe get a second opinion, and do be sure to test for FELV/FIV, etc, am assuming she has been properly dewormed? Bloodwork could be done to detect specific nutrient or mineral deficiencies that may have or currently is affecting her growth, metabolism, bone structure, etc.

Btw, I have a petite female, she is in excellent health, and still ACTS like a kitten, even though she is approx 6 years old now.

I hand raised a kitten from a sickly feral mother...even though the kitten and her brother were fed the same formula (KMR) on the same schedule, then her more often...she did not gain...was sickly...almost died herself and eventually pulled through....

She and her brother went to a good friend with a fantastic vet, and even though the male was able to be neutered at 6 months...she was still too tiny, even though checked out fine elsewise....she was well over a year before she hit the 6 pound mark where the vet felt she was okay to spay...

She is still petite...tiny...about 1/3 the size of her brother.....but the vet says she is fine....

If the vet is concerned as to why she has not gained weight...why has he not done any testing to find out WHY?
Did he offer and you declined?....If he did not offer, ask him and/or get a second opinion at another vet and have tests run to rule out any undiagnosed diseases or infections, etc....

She just might be a "little critter"

I had my Tiger that I had to eventually put down due to her thyroid. She was not the runt but she was about 6-7 lbs at full growth. That did not stop her from chasing our male who was the runt and wound up being our big boy!

I have nothing else to add, traci and tambrey said it all. Only thing I can say is hope you get a 2nd opinion and I do hope you keep us posted.

In my short time at the shelter I have observed cats from the same litter, one is small at 1 year and the other is huge! We have also had older cats come in to be surrendered and they were also very small, although adults.

Thanks for the replies!

She originally belonged to the people in the apartment upstairs, but they tossed her outside because someone was allergic to cats. She was always hungry, and it was winter, and she developed an upper repiritory infection. That's when Tara took her in.

She went to the vet (6 months at that time) and got meds, but that was all. It took her a long time to get over the infection.

So this was her second trip to this vet. She's getting all her shots, had all tests run (all negative!) and tested for worms. She's perfectly healthy except for her size.

Kitty (she never got a real name because they didn't plan on keeping her) has been this size/weight for several months, and the vet only saw her two times, and I guess she thought she should be gaining weight each month. But Kitty has been this size since she was 6 months old, just never grew.

She's going to another vet for the rest of her shots and to determine if she can be spayed. We'll see what this one says :)

(edited to add:) She eats only dry food, and very little. She's one of those picky eaters who only takes a few bites at a time. They tried some canned food, she ate a little, but turned her nose up at the rest.

And I need to add she's a fiesty little thing. She tore that vet up, and her assistant. Tara overheard the vet say "she's just mean" which isn't true, she's a loving little thing, just doesn't like the vet

What is the brand of food you're feeding, and is it kitten food or adult food? Was she fed strictly kitten food when your daughter aquired her?

Any chance you can post a pic of her?

My uncle once had an entire colony of semi-feral cats kind of just... Happen on his property. (He's one of the most irresponsible people I've ever know in my life, so of course he did nothing about them, and I was only like 8 at the time and couldn't do anything... But that's another story.)

And all of the cats were TINY. None of them ever grew even as big as your average six month old kitten. And they had funny round faces and huge eyes... They were actually pretty adorable. I have no idea if they came from a certain small breed, or if he actually had a new breed of cat spawning all over his property for a while. They looked kind of like Scottish folds, but none had the folded over ears (Note that I'm aware not all of them do. I've looked into the breed because my husband wants one someday. LOL) and they weren't QUITE the same. And were even smaller.

So yeah, cats can definitely be tiny naturally. But checking into it with another vet like they suggested was a good idea. ^^
