excessive thirst/drinking

Post by Barblynnp »

My 5 month old kitten is always drinking water. I am constantly filling the water bowls. Sometimes he lays in front of the water bowl and drinks; yesterday he fell asleep with his chin on the edge of the bowl. He eats a lot also and his belly feels really full. He is using the litter box fine. What do you think could be wrong with him? Is he just a thirsty kitty?

Get him to your vet immediately, only your vet can give him a thorough exam and determine if there may be a serious health issue, opt for bloodwork as well!

The causes to excessive drinking are too numerous to go into here, could be anything from a serious health condition that has caused severe dehydration, to heat stroke, to diabetes insipidus to diabetes mellitus (the latter rare in kittens). Laying in front of the water dish is a RED FLAG that something isn't right, get your kitten to a vet RIGHT THIS MINUTE!
