12 week old kitten...eye infection?

Post by savannahbazemore »

i have three 12 week old kittens and one is having a problem. it keeps one eye partially shut and it has gooish stuff on the eye. So i take a damp rag and wipe it off but it still dosent look like it is helping. The part of the eye that is supposed to be white, is red and i think it is an eye infection but im not sure. and how can you tell if it is an eye infection or something else?

sounds like a URI...in kittens these can be very fatal in a short amount of time...your kitten needs to be seen by a vet and get on proper antibiotics after the correct determination is made...
if there are other kittens in the litter or household, they all need to be watched as well...or better yet...taken to the vet for a well kitty checkup

Tambrey is right. Upper Respritory Infections can be fatal. Take all kittens to vet asap. Call today and tell them one might have an eye infection and needs to be seen TODAY.

Have they been to vet already for shots and worming?

INDOORS ONLY please.

Yep, ALL the kittens need to be seen by a vet TODAY! URI's are extremely contagious amoung litters, as well as any other cats you may have in the home, so all the kittens will most likely require treatment. You should only have to pay one exam fee, and your vet will try to keep the cost of antibiotics at a reasonable rate for all the kittens. Do not wait, get them to a vet TODAY for proper treatment.

Do NOT manipulate kitten's eyes by wiping discharge from them excessively, this only serves to spread bacteria, they need appropriate care and appropriate antibiotics prescribed by your vet. If you have the mother too, she too will most likely require treatment.

Once they are appropriately treated and once healed, you need to schedule vaccination appointments, if they haven't already had their first boosters. Do NOT vaccinate ill kittens or those suffering from URI's, poor nutrition, poor growth and development, your vet will determine their health status accordingly and when they should be vaccinated. Also be sure to discuss dietary needs for them with your vet, including mom cat's dietary needs, health needs, etc.

It could also be conjunctivitis, equally conagious and should be seen by a vet right away.
Another possibility would be herpes. Only your vet can really diagnose this properly. Please let us know what he says and how the little one is doing, ok?
Kitty kisses,
Debbie
