Re: lump in new kitten!
Loopy, I would show up and say that she was a shelter adoption and you are having concerns with the shelter. Say that you are concerned because kitty is irritating the stitches and there is a ball there and you are afraid it could be an infection or worse. Pay close attention to how this Vet treats you because he might very well be your permanant vet. You need to use someone other than the shelter anyway so find one and get to know them. If there is anything wrong with her be sure to make sure it is documented properly[/u][/i] and keep your reciept if you need to use it to show the shelter if there is a problem.
Was kitten given proper vaccinations? All of them ?
Was she tested for all of the diseases?
Make sure if she was and she is still having booster shots and the shelter doesnt do those that you make an appt to get those done as well. Keep her away from the area.

Re: lump in new kitten!
the shelter gave us a "free visit" paper for any of 6 vets but told us which one they partner with (which is the one we called first) we have all documentation on shots and procedures and there were some vaccinations she was not old enough for that we need to schedule (hence our having set up a vet appointment for both cats this week) we noticed the bump Friday night (the same day we got her) and emailed the shelter... then yesterday the bump seemed more pronounced and worried us (it was about 11pm though and we couldn't find anywhere on this island that was open) so I spoke with the shelter this morning, then my boyfriend spoke with the vet we had appointments with...
I told him to move on down the list and find another vet to make appointments with and to cancel this vet as he seemed to blow things off as much as the shelter... unfortunately, being on a little island, there's really not a lot of choice that's here and convenient....
as long as there's no blood or puss from the area and it doesn't seem to be bothering her to touch.... (and she's eating and using the bathroom just fine) that she will be ok til we get there in the morning...
all papers are in her little booklet (and I copied everything immediately) as well as had my boyfriend take a picture of the area today, so that if it changes we can show how it looked (as well as taking it to the shelter...) either something is wrong with her alone or all of her litter mates are going to be having issues as well....

Re: lump in new kitten!
hopefully she will check out okay....good idea to take pictures and keep and eye on the area....feel it for warmth as well, make sure that the area itself is not getting feverish...
I live in a very rural area so understand not having many vets to choose from

Re: lump in new kitten!
so far, not any additional heat from the area and she seems to like having that area rubbed... don't want to make a big deal out of nothing but then again don't want to dismiss something that would be a big deal either....
Re: lump in new kitten!
I always think better safe than sorry..I am sure my vet gets irritated with me sometimes...but I want to be sure they are okay....
Re: lump in new kitten!
yeah I agree.... unfortunately because we moved here less than a year ago, and just got the kitties and don't have a family vet yet, it makes for things to be very disconcerting when something like this happens so quickly.... we'll just have to get things set up that much faster...
The owner of my vet practice hates me and actually his office manager does too. The feeling is mutual.
As long as the bump isn't getting bigger in size, hot to the touch, oozing or appear painful to her when you touch it, she should be okay until tomorrow morning. Watch for lethargy or the onset of a fever. One or two of my girls had this bump at the end/beginning of their incision area after being spayed and it turned out to be nothing serious.
Keep us posted and congrats on the new additions to your family!

Re: lump in new kitten!
when was she fixed?
Is it bruised(not uncommon)?
It is oozing any clear, yellow, pink or red liquid?
Swelling, irritated or when cat is licking at it, it should be seen by a vet.
Tambrey knows me all to well and knows how i feel about Human dr's so Tam can ya imagine what my Vet's techs and receptionists think of me.? LOL Yep that's right they do. They actually feel that since I was a tech at one point that I should know better and they make me help them when I'm there. LOL But it's ok ROFL.
LOOPY sorry you have to be stressed thinking about this with your kitty. How upset you must be. I am sure if it is something it will be fine as long as you get her seen by tomorrow. Even if she seems better tomorrow you should get her checked by the vet to make sure there is no underlying problem that you are not seeing and she might be hiding.

Re: lump in new kitten!
she's only 10 weeks old and was fixed at the shelter on the 14th... we got her on the 20th... there's no oozing of any kind, or irritation or inflamed and angry redness.... just a big lump... and it's not a solid hard lump, nor does it seem to bother her at all when it's touched...
my boyfriend is more convinced tonight that it's an obstruction of some sort... she's playing and chasing the 5 year old cat with her, climbing and jumping from the chairs and sofa and snuggling up for loving and naps just as if nothing is wrong, if my boyfriend hadn't turned her over to rub her belly we may not have even noticed it... but it's definitely changing size.... it got bigger as the day went on yesterday and is smaller today but still quite pronounced.... no matter what she's seeing someone tomorrow.... and I'm sure even then all of my worries won't be squelched completely...

Re: lump in new kitten!
So I called the shelter vet again this morning because I wanted her to explain the lump to me (so I know what to tell the vet when she goes today).. and she said that is is common in cats that young to develop these lumps due to irritation by the internal sutures, especially if she is picking at the stitches at all (and also because she is no longer confined to a small cage but is running around and jumping and climbing.. ) that we should not worry about it at all unless there is puss or something oozing from it, and/or pressure on it causes her to cry out.
she told me to get some bitter apple and spray it on her so she won't lick or pick at the area and the swelling should be gone within a WEEK...
but if I'm still worried I can bring her back NEXT MONDAY for her to check it out!
am I wrong for feeling that they don't really care about her wellbeing?
