I am so, so sorry for your loss. My heart aches for you and I'm in tears right now feeling your pain. Gently journey sweet Max, you are loved.

I'll ask my feline-only group if they can recommend anyone south of them. My vet's SO is also a vet and works somewhere in NYC. Not sure exactly where but as soon as they come back from vacation, I'll get on her about referrals.
