My ex-boyfriend who has never had a cat got me one for Christmas a few years ago, when they were still $200.00! (I'd rather have jewelry!). I had three cats at the time, and all of my cats HATED it. The noise scared them. It also scooped too soon afterward, before the litter had clumped and hardened, so it would scoop up these goopy clumps and dump them in the basket. The baskets fill up fast with multiple cats, and they are not cheap! I'm sure prices have come down, but I found them very expensive at the time. I might try it again one day, but it's retired.

Just a note

Post by TheSkeptic »

My neighbor has one she got from a garage sale cheap. (Somehow cheap and my neighbor seem to go together.)

She loves it, but it is REAL noisy. When a cat goes at night it wakes up the whole house 10 or 15 minutes later. (Grooaaaan Groooaaan Groooaaaan)

If a cat steps in the box while it is running it stops and goes off again a few minutes later. Grooaaaan Groooaaan CLANK, WHIIIIIINE, CLANK)

Other than the noise it works fine and appears perfectly safe.

loved the sound effects, i've heard similar complaints.

i actually bought a litter box recently from petsmart that has a large plastic mesh insert that you pick up to clean out the box. it works very well for about 95% of the mess in the box.

you simply tip the container (high walls) to one side to place the mesh back in the box. check it out next time your in the store, detailed instructions are included.

i've considered building one myself but figured "why reinvent the wheel?".

I too have to say I loved your sound effects, Skeptic  Also love your avatar :D

Never used on of the selfcleaning boxes myself because I don't use clumping litter...but I had a friend who used the "littermaid" and she went through three of them that broke until she finally gave up. That's my only experience with them

Thanks to everyone who posted.

Yesterday, I bought the litter box that Jason spoke of in his post.

Hopefully, I'll run into someone who has one and I can get that hands-on (and ears to the litter box) experience.

Take care everyone.

I love this new board!!

I hope the new box works for you.

I had something similar once, but it was more like a three-piece litterbox. There was the bottom, and then the insert, which was more like a strainer the exact size of the box (fitting in perfectly) and then there was a top piece that was supposed to help the "flingers" not "fling" it over the edge.

The problem I found with it was that the clumps kept sticking in the insert/strainer.

I gave up when I realized I'd have to take it outside to use the water hose to blast the urine-cement out of the strainer part.....every time I tried to clean the box (at least once a day).

It's in the barn.

i had that problem at first but it went away when i started using more litter in the box.

well, i guess i was just lucky for a while...back to just a normal plastic bin with litter in it....the clumps got to be a real pain in the mesh...gheesh. i've considerd maybe a silicon spray to keep the litter pan not as susceptible to having the clumps so easily attached.

i think nasa needs to work on this for a year or so.

This litter box lasted two days for me then I broke it. Thankfully, Agway gracefully returned my money and I went back to the scooping daily.

Can't say I would recommend this litter box to anyone at this point...the concept is good but definely needs work. It way worth a try though..
