Kitty pooping both inside and outside of litter box - help!!

My little kitten is pooping both inside and outside her litter box. We keep her roaming space limited to the living room, kitchen and laundry room. Her litter box and food is kept in the laundry room. Sometimes I will go in there and see that she has peed or pooped in the litter box, but the past two days she has been pooping on the carpet sometimes. She uses the litter box AND poops on the carpet. So I know she knows where the litter box is, she just goes on the carpet sometimes. And today, i went in my bedroom to get soemthing and she followed me in there and went to the corner and pooped!! I just don't understand why, if she knows where the litter box is, she won't use it all the time. I can't have her pooping on my carpet!! I keep her in the laundry room at night to get her oriented to where the litter box is, but she just still is pooping on the carpet.....what to do!!!!!!!!!!
