Post by toby »

Does anyone know in Banamine injections has been approved to give to cats? Have any of your cats had this for inflammation? Thanks.

Why do you ask? Do you have a cat who needs veterinary care and attention? If so, get your cat to a vet, NOW.

Banamine is not recommended for cats, it is contraindicated and can have some serious side effects. It is an NSAID and all NSAIDS can have side effects, but there are other veterinary solutions available that are safer and better tolerated for cats.

Do not allow the vet to give banamine to cats. Likewise, do NOT EVER give NSAIDS to a cat yourself, this must be left to a qualified vet who can make a determination upon exam and the exact cat's condition to warrant safety or effectiveness for the condition being treated.

Thanks Traci, I ask because the vet gave my cat an injection & I didn't know what it was until I read the bill summary after I got home. I didn't recognize the name of the med & tried to find it on the www but could only find it approved for horses. That's when I got worried because my cat is very old. So far she doesn't seem to have any negative effects from it. Thanks again.

Toby, what's wrong with kitty? What was the banamine injection for? (old-school vets might have given it to reduce fever, for example, but ideally it should not be given to cats)

As a rule, vets generally tell the client what medications they plan to give, giving the client opportunity for informed consent. If your vet isn't telling you what he's doing for your kitty, I would definitely seek a new vet, preferably feline-only or a vet who practices up-to-date medicine. For one thing, if your kitty is older than 10-12, she may not be able to tolerate certain medications (like due to a kidney or liver or heart condition etc)
