constipation!
constipation!
hello, this is my first post. due to a big move I had to make I was unable to bring my cat with me. I adopted her out but the day I moved she escaped from where I left her. now I have travelled 16 hours by bus to and from and have rescued her back. my neighbor called me to tell me she was sitting at the door to my apt every night waiting for me to let her in. she was a week missing before my neighbor called. now i have noticed that although she is eating and drinking fine she seems to be constipated.i saw her 3 times today try to have poo and nothing came out. she has no fever nor does she seem to be in any pain. Nor has she any abdominal swelling. she is sweet and lovely as usual. could this just be reaction to whatever she ate during that week on the street? she is spayed and has all her vacines and has been recentley wormed. she is a well kept kitty
thanks, Nancy
Re: constipation!
I still would get her in to a vet since you have no idea what happened to her while you were gone...she could have eaten something that is causing an obstruction...who knows....
Better safe than sorry.....I know you are new in town there, so ask around for recommendations for a good vet and get her seen as an emergency basis...explain what has happened to her in the last couple of weeks and let the vet determine what is wrong...probably an x-ray or MRI would be needed to really make sure as to what is going on with her....
And cats will "suffer in silence"...by the time they make noise...they are in severe distress and often times too late by then...please do not think that just because she is not making noises or seemingly in pain...that she is okay, and is just constipated...
Let us know what the vet says

Re: constipation!
hello Tambrey,
thanks. i plan on taking her to the vet but at the moment the woman who is keeping her for me is travelling and wont be back home until tonight. As i cant have her at home where i live now i have her staying with a wonderful woman who takes in abandoned cats and dogs. she has a large cattery and she seems pretty happy there. i go everyday and clean the cattery and spend the day with her.
I know that cats suffer in silence. i do have a good vet (this is where I found out about Rosa the animal saint) and will take her there.Wish me luck with my lovely sweetie. her name is Fina (fee-na)which means Fine or small and beautiful in english. thanks again.
cheers
Nancy

Re: constipation!
What exactly is she doing that you believe she is constipated? Is she squatting in unusual places, crying out, straining to go?
It is quite possible she was actually without food for the week she was missing, and going this long without food could cause constipation, or excess gas in the intestines. Since we can't see her, the best thing to do is get her to the vet immediately. Also, don't mistake straining for constipation, it could also be a urinary tract infection or blockage. Tell the woman keeping her to at least get her started on soft or canned food, but ideally, the vet should see this kitty immediately.
May I ask why you can't keep her with you?
Is she staying with the woman only on a temporary basis until you can have her back? Is this "cattery" an actual shelter, does the woman let the cats and dogs run loose? Are the cats seperated from the dogs? Are the cats and dogs vetted, vaccinated, disease-free? I realize you're in a different country, but here in the U.S., this would be an unacceptable situation to "rehome" a cat. The fact that your kitty escaped in the first place is not a sign of security on the premises, and if the woman is gone all the time, how can she keep an eye on all the animals in her care?

Re: constipation!
I think it is great that you went to such lengths to rescue your own cat and hope Fina is better soon.
Re: constipation!
To Traci,
you have jumped to many assumptions that arent true. she tried to poo 3 or 4 times and nothing came out. the place where she is fine.I would never have left her there if it wasnt a good place and remember this is a home for abandoned and mistreated animals that this woman supports on her own dime. the dogs and cats are cared for by a wonderful generous woman and a great kind vet. most people should be so good. thanks for replying.

to Mompaws,
thanks so much. it was hard to sleep knowing she was out there. I had to make the trip. i have had her since she was a tiny 1 week old baby (someone killed her mom a week after she was born.) she is my little bottle fed baby!

Re: constipation!
I made no assumptions, I posed some questions.
In any event, only a vet can determine with an exam.
