Geriatric Household...*sighs*....

Post by Tambrey »

Well..it looks as if Majik is making a trip to the vet's tomorrow.....*sighs*....

He is not eating this evening and just meowing at us... even canned food....just licks his mouth and meows, and his breath smells nasty....so I have a feeling it is teeth...again....he has not has his checked lately...

by again, I just mean...another one.....another cat with teeth needing checked/pulled...

What is it with their teeth lately...or is it just because they are all getting old?...Callie needs to go in as well for hers, but she is still eating, so Majik takes priority tomorrow....but she is next in line....

Good thing our vet lets us have a revolving account!!

hhmmmm....well...Majik seems fine now...sleeping in the recliner.....I figured I would try to get him to eat again.....I set him in front of the food...he sniffed made a face and licked his nose again...maybe he does not like the smell of that food?

regardless....he goes in to get his teeth checked tomorrow!!!

Doesn't matter the age, tooth decay and plaque and tarter can begin as early as 1 or 2 years of age. Even when plaque or tarter are removed, it has to be followed up on yearly because it can re-accumulate. Think of them in terms of kids, when you are little, your parents take you to the dentist yearly to make sure you don't have cavities and other problems. Also, diseased teeth can become brittle and break off, inviting more infection and pain.

In an older kitty, this is harder for them because they are VERY susceptible to secondary infections, and of course, all that bacteria in the mouth can enter the bloodstream and affect the heart and kidneys.

This is why annual dental checks are imperative for all cats (and dogs). Getting the problems fixed before they get worse.

Hubby took Majik in this morning since he has an overnight install tonight....

The vet looked at his teeth and gums and said they look okay...maybe a bit of a buildup around one area but his gums are black too...but it was not tender when he worked/touched that area, either....he was not concerned at this time about anything he saw in there....

temp was still normal but near the higher end of normal and he just feels warm to hold....nose and eyes a bit crusty/stuffy/runny....so could be at the beginning of a URI....gave him a shot and sent him home for now with Clavamox twice a day.....

This evening Majik seems more rested and relaxed...wandering around and not just moping...not as "mouthy/whiny"...and he did eat some canned food as well as some of my white rice with cream of mushroom soup....
and no, I do NOT normally feed table food, but I figured if he will eat it, I will let him for now...

He almost acted like he could not smell the food or tell how close his face was to it...I was watching him eat and he would move his whole face over the dish until his nose bopped into the food, then he would start eating...it did take him a while...but he ate...I picked him up...he burped and his breath smelled like "sour tummy"...if that makes sense...and then he turned to go eat some more...

I will see how his appetite does over the next 2-3 days with the Clavamox....and take it from there...

We have success!!

After this afternoon, watching MAjik sit at the food dishes and seem to WANT to eat, but seemingly NOT knowing the food was there, even though he SAW me put it there....and even after I put him ON THE COUNTER with a dish of food of his own....with some acidophilus milk (just a dab hoping for the smell or flavour to entice him)....and watching him sniff around then meow and walk away....I decided that if I did not SEE him eating by the time I went to bed tonight he was spending the day tomorrow at the vets for Sub-Q and force feeding if necessary...

but I got home from bowling....he JUMPED from the windowsill and RAN through the living room...JUMPING over the other cats and onto the buffet to his regular PLATE...not a bowl but a PLATE where he usually gets a few kibbles of canned food when I feed the two older ones....he GOBBLED down about half a can of beef flavoured canned cat food....so mayb he does not like the chicken?!....
maybe he is feeling better from whatever?....or starting to?.....I am by no means letting up on my watchfulness of him....but I was sure relieved to see him eating like he did....he was sniffing the food and eating normally....

I have yet to see him at the water fountain....but then again, his coat is still shiny and his skin very pliable at this point in time....his gums and mouth are still moist and eyes seem bright...so he must be drinking at some point in time...

How old is he and when was his last full bloodwork? Did the vet palpate for enlarged thyroid?

Remember, a mouth exam doesn't detect everything, especially behind teeth and around the back molars, he could still have something going on, an abcess forming, etc.

Majik is coming on 7 years old...and it has been a couple of years since any bloodwork...and with his age especially...true...I should get a full blood profile done on him....I never thought of an enlarged thyroid, even with my own throid issues....thanks Traci!

Doing better....
I put the dry kibble into the dishes for the evening feeding...I try not to let them run out, but since I have been working longer hours, they have been sometimes....
Majik was right there with the rest nose in a dish munching away....actually he ended up going from dish to dish sampling some from each....I had just put a few into each dish to get them started then needed to go to the trunk for the new bag of food to completely fill them...

Then when I put out the canned food for Gypsy and Cuddles....I usually put "one bite" out for EACH the other cats, but lately Callie and Majik have been getting a bit more due to their age and health....Majik gobbled his right up and then was back to the dry kibble....

Last I saw he was sitting on the kitchen floor washing his face....

I still think it is a good idea to get him back in for bloodwork and especially his thyroid looked at...
And Callie too....
