Is regular milk OK for cats?

Post by Turkeycat »

Hi everyone,

I need a final word on this: I hear different things from different people, and I need to know: Can I give my adult cat milk from the grocery store (not lactose-free or made for cats specifically)? Does it matter if it's whole milk or half and half? If regular milk is bad, can I give my cat lactose-free milk? She loves milk like crack and does not seem to have any adverse effects .. no diarrhea, etc. i give her a small saucerful in the morning but don't give her any more later in the day even when she whines for it. Please fill me in in what to do.

Although she may be tolerant of milk now, cats can develop a lactose intolerance at any time. The only time cats need milk is during kittenhood before weaning, and that milk should only be the mother's milk (for vital colostrum) or a kitten milk replacer made specifically for kittens.

No, whole milk and half and half are too rich and contain fats, do not give them, and do not give cream etc.

Ideally, don't give her milk products at all. If you absolutely must, use low-fat, 1% or 2% milk only as an occasional treat, not every day. There is also a product called cat-sip, just for cats, but again, only intended as an occasional treat.
