cat licking

Post by sarah85 »

Hi, wonder if any one can help,i've had my cat just under a year. sheis 4 years old, healthy and up to date with all her injections. She has always been very licky (herself and me!). She licks her left hind leg so much that she has worn away a small patch of hair and it has started to scab. I have checked her over and this is the only area, it does not appear to be sore for her. ANy advice on how to stop her licking this area?Or do you thikn that this is indicative of a deeper problem for which she needs to see the vets?!

There is fur loss and obvious abrasions, scabs, etc, yes, you need to get her checked by your vet. She could be licking/grooming excessively due to stress, pain, or internal organ disfunction. Don't wait, play it safe and get her seen ASAP. Your vet may recommend a skin scrape and/or culture to rule out mites, flea allergy dermatitis, fungal infection, bacterial infection, and will also want to rule out food allergies/environmental allergens, and possibly bloodwork.
