Traci? Davet?

Post by MA »

Sorry to be a pain, but I have a question. Bartee got his sub cu fluids at the vet, and his neck was swollen where the fluids went in. His neck is not swollen now, but on his front leg right at the elbow he has a big soft pouch of ? hanging that was not there before? Would the fluid flow that way? Or is something else wrong with this beautiful boy?

Assuming fluids was the only treatment, yes, that could very well be it. Fluids usually disperse forward, no matter at what point at the body they are given. If given over the right shoulder for example, they will disperse to the forward leg, usually will dissipate within a few hours, unless severely dehydrated, in which case, they can take longer.

Did you vet give Bartee an injection of cortisone or pred? I would think with any inflammation relating to oral ulcers, he would have given a quick injection or at the very least, discussed with you the option of prednisolone in oral suspension to give at home for a few days to see if he responds. If he didn't discuss this with you, please call him back first thing in the a.m. and find out about that. Also wonder if he prescribed antibiotics???

Also, eosinophilic granuloma can mimic these types of oral ulcers, so prednisolone would be a first-choice treatment anyway, at least to gauge a response. If Bartee doesn't improve his appetite and seems to progress, don't even wait for a recheck, get him back and ask to test for EGC and/or bacteria that may be causing the ulcers (kidney disease and neoplasia can cause them too, but don't want to alarm you and don't want to assume without further examination and/or testing).

Trust your instincts, MA, if his appetite isn't improved by tomorrow, don't wait, opt for further examination, you also don't want this going unattended without antibiotics and possible steroid approach, at least on temp basis until this is diagnosed...oral ulcers are extremely painful and anorexia can of course develop into other serious problems.
