Hi Traci,

There is a bit of a funny ending to this story. Charlie is home now, doing very well. Eating, taking his meds and actually playful. He had 1 extraction.

When we picked him up last night we spoke to the tech who checked him in and also assisted with his dental. I asked about the food in his stomach and she got a lost look on her face. She then said, "Oh, they must have confused him". It seems there was another Charlie having a dental yesterday, a white diabetic dog! (Charlie is a black cat--can't get more opposite than that!)
So apparently he didn't have any food in his tummy.

The liver test they ran was a bile acid test.

Are you kidding me???

Gosh, I hope this doesn't happen often, I think I would casually mention this to the vet, because if the tech has a habit of this or is frazzled or forgetful, this needs to be addressed. I know mistakes can be made but sheesh, worrying you for practically nothing.

I would however, ask about possibly rechecking the ALT and AST, maybe include BUN and bilirubin then too (thanks for finding out about the bile acids). If your vet has a specific analyzer, he can break these down individually, saving you cost. Whenever the enzymes are elevated and more than one, it's always best to recheck them to ensure they are not problematic. I don't think it's necessary to recheck bile acids.

I'm so glad he's home and doing good!!
