we cannot see or diagnose over the internet....I suggest a trip to the VET ASAP and let him or her have a look and decide the best course of action

I suggest the same as well as screening your fireplace better if your cats are commonly burned by it. Not saying that are, but if you suspect this to be an ember burn, then they are getting too close.

Again, we can't see or diagnose online so you're best bet is to get kitty to the vet.

Get kitty to a vet RIGHT NOW, only a VET can examine and determine what the lump/etc is, you have to know this must be excruciatingly painful for your cat. Even if he isn't showing signs of pain, cats hide pain. Nothing about a lump/whatever in the ear is normal (or anywhere else on the body), get kitty to a vet IMMEDIATELY!

Hematoma? The vet really chose not to treat it? I though hematomas were normally drained because they can become infected or be painful. I think I'd get a second opinion if I were you. I hope it's not to awfully large of a hematoma!

he said that recently one of the cats died from getting surgery to get it out and if he drained it it would come back. He said it would eventually go away but the ear would be limp.

He said that because he isn't competent enough to do the procedure.

Please, get your cat to a qualified vet who knows how to treat hematomas in cats' ears. Yes, it will require anesthesia and yes it will require draining, but it needs to be done by a competent vet. You have to understand how excruciatingly painful this is for the poor cat, and it is susceptible for infection, which can go deep into the inner ear canal and cause a new set of problems!

Don't wait on this, get kitty to a new, more qualified, feline-only vet TODAY.

Why do you ask questions, ask for help, yet never follow up on the advice given?

Your vet is partially wrong. This hematoma is painful, it may or may not burst, and if it does, it will get infected, and this infection can also spread through the inner ear and cause worsening problems. If it keeps recurring, like they often do, then surgery to correct it is usually warranted. Your vet also needs to determine the CAUSE of the infection, in which to prevent it from happening again.

See a new vet, period. Your cat is in pain and hematomas are NOT normal.
