Pregnant cat ready to deliver?
Re: Pregnant cat ready to deliver?
Dixie would like me to tell y'all that she is feeling much better and to thank everyone who followed her predicament and wished her well.
I picked Dixie up this morning. Our vet told me that my poor little girl was so full of pus and that there was this huge bump, that if I had not brought her in when I did it would have ruptured. So she was in her last hours, and did indeed have pyometra. She has a good-sized scar and apparently when something like this happens, the vet removes all of the reproductive organs. She is meowing at me now because I'm not paying attention to her (she has stuck to me like glue all day long). She was still pretty much out of it until about noon. After that, she started eating like there was no tomorrow. I did bring antibiotics and pain meds home, so she should be very comfortable until she heals.
Thank you all again for being so compassionate. The first reply to my cry for help was kind of cold and chided me for not having Dixie spayed long ago. But Tambrey, your own story was almost identical to mine, so that helped ease my terrible guilt for letting my baby go this long unspayed. So Mamabear, Traci and Tambrey, your help and compassion was a real comfort. I wish you all and your pets the best life has to offer.

Re: Pregnant cat ready to deliver?
Dixie, i am so happy to hear that the sounds of kitty being cranky with you for not paying attention to her still fill your home. With this I would hope that you yourself will try to educate your friends and family about spaying regardless of whether they are in or outdoor kitties. She didn't get pregnant and this was not the cause of her getting pregnant and a miscarriage. This is strickly something that a female gets when not spayed. Just thought I would clarify this just in case the vet didnt and so that if you do speak of your ordeal with others and yes I do say ordeal because it is stressful for you and your kitty to go through this, that you tell them what it was from and why it happened.
I am so happy that you listened and you have your kitty to show for it. God Bless you and your kitty and hope to hear of posts from you and how she is getting into the right kind of trouble.

Glad to know she is doing better.....and that we were able to all help...that is what the forums are here for...we cannot diagnose, and we ill be blunt in saying GET TO A VET....but it is for the cat's (or dog's) own benefit to do so...but we can always lend support before and after....
she will feel ALOT better in a few days....keep her activity restricted for 2-3 days at least and check the suture site for signs of redness or swelling....if she is like CUddles...she will want it rubbed gently all around because it is itchy!!
Did she come home with antibiotics...the vet SHOULD have sent her home with liquid Clavamox with the infection that she had inside of her....if not...call tomorrow and request a prescription and make sure she gets it....Cuddles is on a dropper twice a day until the bottle is gone...

Oh, yes, she came home with antibiotics and pain meds. It is amazing how fast she is recovering, and eating! She hates getting her oral meds, but I guess that is to be expected. I must admit, even though I have had cats all my life, I did not know anything about pyometra. But I have a really good vet, and she explained everything to me. I am such a firm believer in spay/neutering (I buy the post office stamps that say spay/neuter your pets and order bank checks that have spay/neuter messages on them from SNAP), but did not realize that by not spaying Dixie, even though she was a house cat, the fact of not being spayed presented life-threatening consequences. What a lesson I got. I will post on her progress, and try to get a picture to post as well.

Ladies,
This just an FYI. At the bottom of each email I send, I have a standard quote, like a signature, that you might like to use. "A country is known by the way it treats its animals."....Jawaharlal Nehru. Need I say more?

Mamabear,
You might like this one. It's about cats and their resiliency when it comes to healing. I live near North Carolina State University. Their College of Veterinary Medicine is one of the best in the nation, being in the top five out of 28. A recent graduate once told me they have a saying there about injured cats: "as long as both parts are in the same room the cat will survive".
