Psycho Kitty

Post by Isabelsmom »

I have had my wonderful kitten since November and she is about 7-8 months old. She is usually very calm and loving (she loves to give kisses) but every once in a while she goes crazy, dive bombing all over my apartment and attacking me. The past week she has gotten worse. Usually I could just push her away and she would leave me alone but now she follows me and continues attacking. I am concerned because I have become scared of her at night because she has started attacking my head/face. I know that she loves me and I am so worried that she is angry with me for something. What do I do? Is she just being a kitten? Does she hate being an indoor cat? (She doesn't have a choice)

Please help!!

There are experts here but I'll give it a try. I think that she's just being a kitten, my cat is a younger and does the same thing sometimes, it's his way of saying play with me. I usually get out a toy and play with him.

i'm not a behaviorist, but could you explain what the attacking is.

you should commit your self to not giving this much thought, check out the search function here for other responses on indoor/outdoor issues.

I'm going to ask the exact same as Jason....can you describe the attacking....is she extending claws and drawing blood? Biting you hard? Leaving puncture wounds?

If no to the above, she is most likely exercising her kitten instincts (hunt, stalk and attack her prey), all kittens are energetic and rambunctious at this age and are expending a lot of energy.

It could be that she might be bored. Providing interesting diversions might help. Such things might include another scratching post, a safe window perch, a kitty condo or kitty tree, interactive toys, and of course, your attention and affection. Perhaps she only wants more of your attention in playtime.

As far as the definition of attacking she does draw blood with both her claws and sometimes her teeth. I try to give her as much attention as possible but I am a full-time student so I am gone much of the day.

Thank you all for your help.

Just a guess but could she be in heat?

My cats get bored very easily no matter what the toy. I bought a cat video that plays in your VCR; it shows birds and squirrels. They love it and it keeps them occupied until I get situated after work and can have playtime with them.

Good luck!

Well I have had her fixed so unless they can still be in heat I don't think that's it. Good suggestion though on the tapes but I have a feeling she wouldn't sit still for it. I watch animal planet all the time and it never seems to interest her.

If getting her a kitty playmate is an option, than THAT is my suggestion. If she has someone who LIKES to play the sort of games she is trying to play with you, she will seek out the kitty instead of you.

I like Jen's suggestion...sounds like she has lots of energy and is simply bored :)
