Annie,

I don't know if you will see this but just try to take each day as you can, that's all any of us can do. There are only so many tests and treatments available for these problems, while great strides are being made there are no sure fire answers.

I truly do not think your kitty's problems are that unique but that perhaps just the right antibiotic and for maybe a longer time on it might be needed now or at some point to get to the route of this infection. There are some pretty resistant bacteria out there as you must be aware being in the medical field - this pertains to kitties too. If the C&S so warrants (culture and sensitivity test) maybe try, if not already tried, a sulfa drug by injection like Tribrissan, it can get deeper into the bladder tissue - very tolerable but hard on skin at injection site, just have to be careful when giving (not cheap but may not need to give for that long)...it has helped my Bailey a lot where other meds failed when his infections were at their worst.

If your kitty's pH does not stay down enough on just the IVD, struvites build perhaps look into a small dose of an acidifier like DLM (methionine), per your Vet it is safe in small doses and can be controlled easier than food, esp. with home pH testing (very inexpensive) and you could also try multistix to look for leukocytes and other changes in urine at home too (I do both of these on an ongoing basis rather than running to the Vet everytime)...and my kitty also gets DLM, has for some time, it has helped a lot.
He also takes pred when needed, sometimes a short course, right now a maintenance one every other day, not a magic pill but does keep things a little better in line though he has bleeding issues which your kitty does not have.

Just as there are human conditions no doctor can solve the same is true of Vets and cats....but if you can beat the odds most of the time, if the cat has good quality of life overall you are doing ok. Don't let the frustration get the best of you, push and keep pushing, it maybe something simple that helps your kitty or it may be a life long event that you will deal with from time to time. Don't give up, you just not have hit the right combo of treatment or time may be all that is needed. I know it is extremely difficult for both your kitty and you to be dealing with this, my heart breaks for that little guy and it's very hard to watch them go through this. My prayers and thoughts go out to you and your kitty, I am hoping for the best and that something will help him and soon.

We are here not only to share what we know or have experienced whether it is new info or not....but also for support - you asked how I do it and having a good support system to bounce things off of or simply listen and care while working through the stress we go through in these situations is an immeasureable help.

Take care
