Hello Traci,
Been a few years since my last post. Wondering if
you may have any ideas here: About a month ago behind
my workplace I discovered a litter of kittens. They are
probably around 8-10 weeks old now. I've tried
a number of things to catch them and have failed. What
worries me the most is that we're down to two of the
little guys left. They are VERY wild and will not let anyone
get within 2 feet away without scurrying off into the
bushes. I bought a bag of kitten kibble and some of
that Catmilk stuff and have been feeding them off and
on even going as far as hanging around when I'm not
working. This seems to have warmed them up a bit to humans.
They both also have some upper respiratory
issues (sneezing, green stuff around their eyes, etc...) I
am concerned as the temperature is dropping especially
at night around here (southern Ontario, Canada) and would
really like to save these guys and get them some shelter and
medical attention. They are AWESOME! How can I catch 'em?
Ideas for catching abandoned kittens /Traci?
Re: Ideas for catching abandoned kittens /Traci?
Can you try using a Have-A-Heart live trap? Cover it to make it appear a nice shelter, and place enticing food like fishy-smelling canned food inside. If you're spending more time with them, try sitting close to the trap as you entice them to you with the canned food...or try tuna in spring water, canned salmon, fresh-cooked chicken breast (just boiled, no fat, no breading etc). Don't ever leave the trap unattended though, you don't want any animal trapped and alone in the trap in the weather elements and without food/water...
The key sometimes is sitting as quietly as you can, don't make sudden movements, talk softly and entice them with a food you know they can't resist. Bring a friend with you to help. Try to choose a time when nearby traffic is minimal, etc.
