my kitten has black stuff in eyes and nose
my kitten has black stuff in eyes and nose
my kitten is 10 weeks old I have had him for a week and a half and have noticed a black substance like a crustation in the corner of his eyes and in his nostrils.I have wiped it away but it still keeps coming back .Not sure what it is.He also seems to cry everytime he has a poo and they are never very solid.I know that the person we got the cat off of was feeding him adult food and when we got him we changed his diet to kitten food so I think this may contribute to it.If anybody has any information that could help I would be most grateful.

Ideally, a 10 week old kitten should still be with it's mother. However, since that is not the case and the kitten is now with you, it is your responsibility to ensure 100+% quality care. You've done so in switching to a kitten diet and it's possible the transition is giving the kitten diahhrea. Is it a high quality brand?
The crud in his eyes and nose could be allergies or indicitive of a cold or other illness. Most importanty, have you had the kitten checked by your own vet? It is imperative that the kitten be examined by a qualified vet before persuing any other course of action (with foods, meds, etc.).

Agree, get your kitten examined by your vet ASAP.

The kitten is on Whiskas as that is what my other cats are fed and just thought that staying with the brand that I know would be better.I will take him down to my vets this week to have him fully checked over.I was going to make an appointment tommorow just to make sure evrything was alright with him as I was getting a concerned.

Yes, get him seen tomorrow, don't wait any longer. Your vet may want to deworm your kitten (don't do this yourself), but will want to rule out an upper respiratory infection first. At the exam, discuss nutrition, testing for FELV/FIV, vaccination schedule, etc. Whiska's isn't a high quality diet, I'd suggest Iams Kitten food for your kitten, and getting your other cats on Iams, or Eukanuba, etc....you can discuss this with your vet.

Re: my kitten has black stuff in eyes and nose
thankyou will have a chat with my vet .and will let you know how i got on.
Re: my kitten has black stuff in eyes and nose
i have seen the vet today and the vet told me that the kitten has cat flu she has given him an antibiotic injection but the antibiotics that they would normally give an adult cat are not suitablr for kittens as it could affect his bones.so she is finding what antibiotics she can give me and i am picking them up tomorrow.so touch wood evrything will be ok as long as he gets these antibiotics inside him
Re: my kitten has black stuff in eyes and nose
Are you comfortable with this vet? Young kittens can be put on a low dose of clavamox, I'm surprised she doesn't know this. Did she check his stool, discuss nutrition with you, did she deworm him? If not, any chance you can see a new vet?

Re: my kitten has black stuff in eyes and nose
I have now picked up the antibiotics and administered it straight away he seems alot more livlier now and is eating well which is a good I must admit I think it was a bit naughty not to have the medicine straight away but the vet said that the antibiotic injection that was given would be ok until he got his proper antibiotics. The antibiotics he was given were called synulox.Which hopefully will get rid off the cat flu.
