Cat has lumps on her head

Post by LinZ »

It's been a while since I've come here, but I'm just looking for a little advice or insight.

I got a letter from my mother yesterday and she was telling me that my female cat Caspurr has got "warts" all over her head ("warts was the word my mom used). I don't know if she means actual bumps or scabs, because I know Caspurr has little scabs all over her head both from itching that occasional itch and probably getting into claw fights with her brother. I know I have noticed one or two small lumps on her head before, and I assumed they were just there naturally (like a mole) or perhaps they were infected hair follicles. I wish I could describe these lumps more accurately, but I'm away in college and my cats are at home with my mom.

My mother did say she was going to take the cat to the vet, which makes me feel better. I know she's always reluctant to take the cats to the vet for anything. But does anyone know what these lumps might be from? My cat is a spayed female and is eight years old, and as far as I know is in normal/good health. I also heard from my mother that all the cats have fleas now...could the lumps be from flea bites?

But why are the lumps only on her head? Could this be feline acne? Do age and gender play a role in whether or not a cat can contract it?

I'm sorry for not being able to provide a better description...I just get somewhat paranoid when something isn't normal with my cats, especially when I tried to find something about 'lumps on a cat's head' on Google and some of the results I got referenced feline cancers. What kinds of factors contribute to feline skin cancers? Or cancers that yield skin lumps?

Cats do not get warts or moles, not in the sense you're thinking of.

Only the vet can determine what they are with a thorough exam. They could be scabs, but depending on the location of the bumps will depend. Tell your mother that NO lumps, bumps etc should ever go unchecked by her vet, ever.

She should also talk to the vet about appropriate flea control, tell her NOT to ever use any over-the-counter products, ever....her vet can recommend safe and effective flea products for the cats (Advantage or Frontline), but she also has to be diligent with vaccuming on a regular basis, washing bedding, etc.
