Traci (and MA) - Remember a long while back that I reported how my vet had shared with me she'd had a rash of cytauxzoonosis cases? And how she lost all of them up til she realized exactly what it was? And how she searched all the pharmacies for the correct antibiotic/drug and finally found it at the WalMart pharmacy? And how the kitty was saved because of the drug?

And Sue (our other Sue)...her vet had at least one or two cases as well, she was considering writing up a journal paper, not sure if she got that far yet, maybe we can get Sue here so we can hound her vet again...Susan, do you know the medication your vet was using?

Well, the last time I was at the vet's office for a real visit (a few months back), she shared with me that the kitty did die. Apparently there was too much damage to its system.

I'm so sorry, I'm sure your vet did everything she possibly could do.

She said that the UGA Vet School, however, was astounded at the cases she'd seen in such a short amount of time. Apparently the carrier (some sort of wild cat/bobcat) was making its rounds through the county!

The bobcat, lynx and Florida panther are the carriers of the tick. I do feel cytauxzoonosis is probably overlooked in many cases, but it sure helps in the differential when the owner states they saw a tick or two, and of course, the clinical signs combined would get the ball rolling in diagnosis....

MA - tell the owner that I'm so sorry the kitten died.

Traci - I'm not sure of the medication my vet used. She did tell me, but I've forgotten. Seems it was a form of common antibiotic. Would it have been the tetracycline or doxycycline back then? The cases were about a year ago, I think.

I'll have to ask her again, if I can remember, the next time I'm in there.
