XD Rx food
After bladder/urethra surgery with crystal analysis, our vet put our little Pooka on Hill's XD Rx food. We are quite faithful in making sure he gets his diet twice a day. However, we feed our cats (ten) Purina Urinary food for treats and Pooka always manages to eat about seven pieces q day. Could this lead to more crystals? I'm not sure what the XD food does to his little system but I can tell you he is so much better since he had the surgery six months ago. Occasionally he will pee out of kitty box but I think this is more habit than new crystals. Thanks.
Re: XD Rx food
Whenever a prescription diet is given, no other foods containing acidifiers should ever be given,. A prescription diet is already acidifying, and if you combine another food that is also acidifying, then the potential for oxalate crystals increases. Nothing should be fed outside of the prescribed diet. The XD is designed to manage oxalate crystals after the the initial treatment approach or surgical removal of crystals.
Your vet can analyze the Purina for you and tell you whether or not it is appropriate for treats, my guess is it is not. He can suggest to you other treats that are safer for FLUTD.
The important thing is to ensure your kitty is regularly checked by your vet, urinalysis done, and keeping stress reduced in the home, since stress is a common precursor to reocurring UTI's or FLUTD reoccurances.
