kitten not eating.
Re: kitten not eating.
yes i have a coupon to see the shelter vet which i was intending on doing early next week, but now i am super worried about him and none of their vets are there on the weekends. i just scheduled an emergency visit with my other cat's vet and the only choice i have is to cash in my savings bonds and hope i have enough to cover treatment.
please know i wasn't trying to be rude. i know the dangers in dehydration and how it effects organ function, i work in kidney dialysis. it's just been very frustrating trying to get him seen, since the shelter told me to have him come in for a follow up within the next month... i just wasn't expecting him to get sick before i got paid again.
thank you all for your help. zim's appointment is in an hour so i will let you all know how it goes.

bizzy...you are a worried mom...not a rude one...and sometimes when we worry, we think other people think we are being rude...okay...does that make sense at all?!
I hope your little one is okay and is able to be treated at a fairly decent cost...or as I said, try to work something out with the vet...if you have seen this vet before, then there should be no reason he or she will not set up a payment plan for you...
Best of luck and let us know how things go with Zim...

Re: kitten not eating.
Glad to hear you're taking him in, it's always best to play it safe.
Perhaps your primary vet can defer the costs back to the shelter, or work out a plan that way, since you already have a followup plan from the shelter, perhaps your vet can then bill the shelter instead of you. Either way, it should work out with your vet.

Re: kitten not eating.
well when i called and spoke to them they said the only person who can decide whether or not they can do that is off on the weekends, and there is no way i can let him go 2 more days like this. as he seems to be getting more and more lerthargic.
but with the savings bonds i just cashed, i have $350... so hopefully that will cover it. ok i am bringing him in now. i will post upon my return.

Re: kitten not eating.
ok. so the vet just thinks he's a little depressed and a little dehydrated. they gave him some fluids and an amoxacilin injection along with some drops to give him twice a day. they did a fecal and didn't find anything at all. but the dr also said his intestines felt a little tight or hard... maybe from the dehydration? or maybe because he ate something he shouldn't have. they just told me to try feeding him chicken or turkey baby food - only a few teaspoons tonight and to watch for anymore throwing up or diarrhea. and if that improves then to try increasing it. and that i might want to call the shelter on monday and possibly have him seen since they have his records.
oh and by the way. i got approved for a 'care card' at my vet with a $500 which takes care of the bill!

ok so now my question is, after getting fluids and eating at least a little bit and holding it down, how long before i can expect him back to normal, like a playful kitten? i fed him a little bit of baby food before i left for my company christmas party and when i came home there was no vomit anywhere. so i fed him a little more just now along with a little milk suppliment for extra electrolytes and fluid. and i am going to wait a few more hours and if he holds that down he can have a little more.
he also is starting his amoxicillin tomorrow morning. he got an injection of it today. so any ideas what time frame i am looking at? a few days? a week? and what can i do in the mean time for his depression besides giving him lots of loving? cause i think the depression is stemming from morgan's hostility towards him. although it is getting better, i caught her actually sniffing his butt just now. but she is still hissy when he comes too close.
so far he does seem to be a little better. he is up and walking around a little more. just still not playful. although i wasn't exactly expecting him to be hyperactive at all tonight. i knew it would take a while.
oh and one last thing. i did post some pictures in the debbies cloud area. go peek at my cuties!

Re: kitten not eating.
hi bizzy...that is AWESOME about the care card!!
I am glad you took him to the vet, for your own peace of mind as well as for Zim beginning to feel better...I am not sure how many days it will take...Traci might be able to better tell you that one...
Did the vet say anything about keeping him warm...tucking soda bottles filled with very warm water under towels or soft baby blankets works well...just remember to change the water every two hours or so to keep them warm...
I can tell you that I took a BABY kitten...about 3 or 4 weeks old that I was hand raising form almost birth (momma died)...this kitten was about half the size of her brother, and had many issues with diarrhea and not tolerating any kinds of meds, her bottom and tummy were sore and raw from going potty and having to be cleaned...and she was the vet office special little baby...we came home one night to find her panting in the litterbox, around 10:30 that night, but she was fighting and her body was getting cooler and cooler...I finally said we cannot let her suffer...so we called the emergency vet (same office since our vet is the local hospital) and took her in to have her put to rest...he listened to her little lungs and took her temp and tests and said, yep, she has pneumonia...gave her a shot adn wrapped her in a blanket and sent us home with meds...this was a Saturday night...
I kept her with the warm soda bottles tucked under towels and a towel draped over to make a warm moist nest for her and her brother, and I dreaded walking into the bathroom for fear of what I wold find...but on Monday morning, when I opened the bathroom door Monday morning, this little calico furball came streaking past me into the hall and never stopped since!!
Sorry for the long story...but if tihs little fighter can make it from the edge of death with pneumonia and worms that could not be treated right away, then surely your little Zim will pull through fine...
I am going to go look at pictures now!!...I LOVE pictures!!

Re: kitten not eating.
Amoxicillin is commonly prescribed when suspecting bacterial infections, and in lieu of additional diagnostics, but you need to keep a close eye on him for additional symptoms or worsening symptoms. Continue the course of antibiotics as prescribed by your vet, and if the symptoms persist or worsen, you'll need to consider additional diagnostics such as bloodwork and/or another fecal.
It could also be that he may be constipated as a result of a change in diet or insufficient diet, so watch his stools daily. If he does not produce a normal stool in a day or two, get him back for an exam to rule out constipation.
Don't give milk products, it can produce excess gas and constipation, most cats are lactose intolerant. It can also cause stomach upset when antibiotics are given.
Again, try feeding Iams canned kitten food, or ask your vet for a temporary trial diet of Hill's prescription P/D, or I/D, he should be able to recommend what is most appropriate at this point.
Many kittens suffer various virals or bacterial infections as a result of a shelter environment, so if any of the symptoms persist, and if the diarrhea does not resolve in another day, get kitten back to your vet promptly for a new fecal exam, etc to rule out coccidia, giardia, etc. Again, you can't risk dehydration, so watch him carefully and followup with your vet.

Re: kitten not eating.
he seems to be doing a little better. he ate quite a bit of baby food this morning and last night with no vomitting or diarrhea since friday. this morning he actually played with a feather toy! but not for too long cause we didn't want to drain him. and my other cat is slowly starting to welcome the idea of him. he is still slightly sluggish, and has been drinking water like crazy. we find he tends to drink more if we keep his water really close to where he is lying so he doesn't have to go far. poor thing must be so worn out.
i do plan on giving the shelter a call tomorrow, to see if i can get him seen there as well (hopefully for free) since they have his records. but if they tell me i would have to pay then i am going to call the vet i took him to on saturday for a follow up and further feeding instructions.
i did try feeding him iams kitten food and he won't have anything to do with it. plus i still don't want to give him solids just yet because the baby food seems to not be upsetting his belly. so i am going to try and slowly mix some iams in with the baby food, and slowly decrease the amount of baby food in it. but not yet. the vet said just baby food at least for the weekend to make sure he can keep it down. which so far so good... no puking.
so for now, considering how week he is and hasn't been eating much before, i prefer to stick to baby food since it is good for him and he can keep it down. we are going to try some kitten food tomorrow.
