Soft, slimey stools?

Post by Molliesmum »

Ever since Mollie was diagnosed with tonsillitis a few weeks back, her
stools have been soft.

After your advice here, I decided to give her a few days to see whether the antibiotic helped her.

The tonsillitis cleared up within a day or so, but these stools have
remained. We thought it might have been the antibiotics, but it would have cleared up by now if it was. The stools haven't really changed much - some days they are more firm, others they are more soft.

The stools still seem formed and the first bits look normal, but the next few just look slimey. I have just cleared her litter box from today, and one stool looked like it had a big bubble on it (hard to explain). Apart from this, she seems fine in herself. She is still eating and drinking normally, and playing havoc! She is 2 in January.

Someone in another Newsgroup suggested giving her a little live culture yogurt, as perhaps the antibiotics upset her good bacteria? Is this a good idea?

Thanks

It is possible the antibiotics caused the soft stool, and if you think this is mucous, it could be a result of stress, but could also be a bacterial infection. I'd first call your vet to explain your concerns, then consider giving yogurt for a few days.

Thank you for your replies.

We have Mollie booked in at the vets tonight just to get her checked out, better to be safe than sorry!

I will post what we find out.

Yes, that's good. Mine just got off antibiotics and her stool was back to its normal shape within a day. Better to check Mollie out.

Well, we took Mollie to the vets Wednesday night, and the vet said her food may be too rich for her. She said that as Mollie is a good weight and healthy in every other way, she doubted that it was anything else. i also asked her to check her temperature, and it was 38, so normal.

She has always had the same diet, which was Whiskas dry food, Whiskas pouches, and a special Sheba once a week. But just recently we have been trying to phase out the pouches on advice from the vet that the biscuits were healthier for her teeth. The vet advised us to just feed her the dry food for a while and see how she goes.

She also mentioned that it could be that the antibiotics had upset her good bacteria, and tried to sell us a small pot of Protexin for £22!! I decided to try her on natural live yogurt for a while to see how she goes on that. Obviously if that doesn't work, we will have to try the Protexin.

The problem I have now is she hates the yogurt (don't blame her, I hate it too!!) Poor thing, I have been daubing it on her paws so she has to clean it off. How much should I feed her?

The funny thing is, she has refused to pass a BM since the vet visit! I'm sure she will go today, she sometimes misses a day.
