Very Sick Kitten, need advice!
Very Sick Kitten, need advice!
Our kitten Nose disappeared over a month ago and we finally got him back on Friday when at last he turned up at the humane society. However...there's a big problem..it doesn't look like in the entire time he was gone he ate much of anything! s a result he's had the diarea after every time he eats (which isn't much at all, he doesn't even seem that interested) He is so so so skinny, and dehydrated.
We took him to the vet who put him on medication to control the diarea and vomitting and he did ok for a day or so, but tonight things have gotton much worse. He can't keep anything down at all, including the medicine! He walks around a little but mostly is just lieing there, his eyes look ok, but he is drewling and seems to be having a rough time swallowing. I'm so worried that he might be going into kidney failure. He's so small and the vet really didn't seem to know what to make of him. Anyway..nothing is open for atleast 9 more hours or so. I called the hospitals and all they could tell me was to get some pedialite (sp?) and rub it into his gums to keep his sugar up.
Anyone have any ideas? He's been dosed for worms, given an antibiotic, they gave him massive ammounts of fluids at the vets office too. I just don't know what to do!

Please try to find an emergency vet immediately! This sounds VERY serious. If he isn't seen very soon this could lead to the worst. He might have picked up a disease while gone, was he vaccinated before disappearing? The symptoms you describe could be distemper! Please do everything to find an emergency vet!

Is there ANY emergency animal clinic you can get to? Now?
Check some of the links on the left side of this page, under "Emergency!" for good advice.
Good luck with your little kitty. Please try everything you can think of to get him to a vet.

No there isn't anywhere we can take him right now. I've called all the animal hospitals and they say they think he'll be fine, that his stomach just needs time to adjust like i originally thought. I don't understand HOW they can say that, but 3 have. I know it isn't distemper though, i've seen that before. However he was not vaccinated before he left, he was to young, and the vet wouldnt do it Monday because of his condition.

Oh and here is something odd to add. I don't know if it makes any difference but i just find it strange. We've been having major flea troubles in this area...and although this kitten has been outside for a month there is not one to be found on him, not one. Could he have some type of blood disorder?
Re: Very Sick Kitten, need advice!
Maybe he wasn't outside, maybe someone took him and then dropped him off at the humane society after a month.
What about searching in a wider area? There must be a vet available somewhere!

There are, but they say he isn't serious enough to bring in. I've been giving him water with a dropper now for about an hour and he hasn't thrown up. I'll just have to keep him hydrated until morning (the animal hospital said that was all they would do for him too, apparently a doctor wouldn't be able to look at him until 8am) I can't beleive our vet missed this!! He saw him 2 days ago!! I should have insisted he run tests.
As for him being inside, i seriously doubt it, he is skin and bone, and when we picked him up he had some type of parasite on his belly, some type of fly larva (already looked into it, as did the vet) Although i really can't explain where he got to for that long...he was found a couple streets down from us, but all month nobody in the entire town saw him. This poor little cat has ben through way way to much.

You will have a sleepness night! I wish you and Nose all the best! I hope he'll be alright. Bring him in as early as possible and if you again feel that the vet isn't doing enough, go and see another one right away!
Keep us posted tomorrow, but for now, keep your attention with him. If he shows any further signs of distress (watch the eyes and his breathing), call the hospital again and insist to have him seen straight away.

Thank you for your help. He was their first appointment of the day, but it wasn't enough. They said they wanted to keep him to run some tests and as soon as i left him he died....and they still don't know why...i can't really think right now. They're doing an autopsy....all i can hope is that it's nothing the other cats could have gotton. I'm going to go wait for the call. My poor little Nose, he never even had a chance.

Echo, I am so sorry for your loss. You did everything you could have done for your kitty. He is much more comfortable now. Take care.
