Concern over rectal temperature procedure

Post by jdogggy »

I just adopted two cute 8 week old kittens, and took them to their first vet visit. The nurse checked their temperature using a digital thermometer, dipepd in an antibacterial solution.

Now I may be overly concerned here, however, I think that they should use disposable thermometer covers like for people, because the antibacterial solution will not kill viruses.

Should I be worried about this? I think that from now on I will not let them take their temperature, I'll do it myself.

Thanks,
J.

Leave the exams up to your vet/techs, they know what they are doing.

It is not prudent for the plastic sleeves to be used on a thermometer for pets, as they are probably not sterile, and they are too large to be inserted in small animals. Antibacterial solution or alcohol are perfectly acceptable for cleaning the thermometers between uses.
